The White House was temporarily converted into a reality TV set, with the President hosting a show where policy decisions were made based on live audience votes.
I woke to my roommate Casey screaming.
Unable to process what was happening, I sat up and rubbed my eyes.
“Someone better be dead,” I mumbled.
“OMG, Olivia!”
Casey shouted, bursting into our apartment.
I grunted and threw a pillow at her.
“Shut up,” I groaned.
She turned on the light and pulled the covers from me.
“Get up, get up, get up!”
“What is it?
Did someone die?”
I asked, pulling my pillow over my head.
“No, but something major is happening at the White House right now,” she said, her eyes wide with excitement.
I sat up, the sleepiness gone and looked at Casey.
She was standing in the middle of our tiny living room in a t-shirt and pajama shorts, her blonde hair sticking out in every direction.
“Why are you so excited?
And why are you waking me up at four in the morning?”
I asked, looking at the clock on my nightstand.
“It’s not four in the morning.
It’s six.” She pointed at the wall clock.
“Six in the morning.” She gasped and put her hand over her mouth.
“Oh my God!
Casey rushed to the couch and grabbed the remote, turning on the TV.
The anchors from Good Morning America were standing outside the White House.
“The President is expected to make an announcement any moment now,” one of them said before a reporter came on the screen.
“There’s a stage being set up outside of the East Room as we speak,” she said.
“This is going to be so crazy,” Casey mumbled, sitting down on the couch, her eyes glued to the TV screen.
“What’s going on?”
I asked, still trying to wake up and process everything that was happening.
She shushed me and put her finger to her lips, never taking her eyes off the TV.
I sighed and walked over to the couch to sit beside her.
A few moments later, a man in a dark suit walked to the podium outside of the White House.
He cleared his throat and began speaking into the microphone.
“My fellow Americans,” he started.
“Today I’m excited to announce a new White House tradition.” He paused and adjusted the microphone.
“The annual State of the Union address is something we all look forward to every year,” he said.
“And this year will be no different.” He sighed and looked down at the paper in his hand before looking back up at the crowd of reporters who were watching him intently.
“This year, we will be hosting a reality show at the White House for the annual State of the Union address.” He cleared his throat and took a sip of water before continuing.
