I was born for the day I met her.
It was as if the whole universe had waited for that exact moment to reveal her to me.
The girl with the hair as red as fire and a smile that could light up the world.
I knew right then and there that I would spend the rest of my days loving her, doing everything in my power to make her mine.
There was just one problem with that plan…
She didn’t love me back.
She never had and from the looks of it, she never would.
Lyra Stone was a beautiful, smart, strong, and fierce girl who had captured my heart at the tender age of ten.
From that moment on, I had made it my mission to prove myself to her, to be worthy of her love and admiration.
The only problem with that was that no matter how hard I tried, no matter what I did, it seemed to never be enough.
She looked at me as a friend and friends were not meant to be loved in the way that I had come to love her.
As the years went on by, I continued to train myself, honing my skills as a warrior and becoming stronger both in body and mind.
The Warrior's Unrequited Love
I had hoped that by doing so, I could prove to her that I was worthy of her love.
That I was not just a friend, but a man who could love her with all of my heart and soul.
The problem with that was that she had never given me any indication that she wanted more from me than friendship.
She had never once looked at me in any other way than as the boy who had been there for her since the very beginning.
The one who had always been there for her, no matter what.
I knew that this day would come eventually.
The day when I would have to tell her how I felt and risk everything we had built together over the years.
I also knew that it would not be easy and that there was a very real chance that she would reject me, shattering my heart into a million pieces in the process.
I stood on the edge of the training grounds, watching as she moved through a series of practice forms with her sword.
The sun was setting in the sky above us, casting a warm orange glow over everything below it.
The Warrior's Unrequited Love
Her sword glinted in the fading light as she moved, slicing through the air in deadly arcs. She was beautiful to watch, moving with a grace and skill that few others possessed.
Her long red hair cascaded down her back in thick waves, catching some of the last rays of sunlight and shimmering like fire as she moved through the series of movements.
My heart pounded loudly within my chest as I watched her, knowing that this was it.
This was the moment when I would finally tell her how I felt and risk everything we had built together over all these years.
I knew that it would not be easy and that there was a very real chance that she would reject me, but I could not continue to live this lie any longer.
I could no longer pretend to be only friends when every fiber of my being yearned for more from her.
With a deep breath, I stepped forward onto the training grounds, my footsteps echoing loudly in the silence of the fading day.
Lyra paused mid-strike, lowering her blade to look at me as I approached.
"Eryndor," she said softly, her voice barely audible over the pounding of my heart within my chest.
"Eryndor," I repeated softly, words tumbling from my mouth before I could stop them. "I have loved you since we were children," I told her truthfully, taking another step closer to where she stood watching me warily now.
The Warrior's Unrequited Love
"And today, I finally choose to let you go."
I stood there for a moment, watching as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the training grounds in a soft blue light.
Lyra had not said a word since I told her that I would no longer pursue her.
She simply stood there, watching me with an unreadable expression on her face.
The air was heavy with tension as I stood there, watching her silhouette against the darkening sky.
Finally, she sheathed her sword and turned to look at me.
I had seen many expressions on her face over the years, but never this one.
It was not pity or discomfort, but something gentler.
Something that I could not quite place.
Without a word, she walked over to where I stood frozen in place and placed her calloused hand on mine.
"Thank you," she whispered softly before squeezing my hand briefly and letting it go.
The Warrior's Unrequited Love
The silence between us was heavy as the last rays of sunlight faded from the sky.
I saw her hand tremble slightly before she withdrew it, her eyes darting to the treeline behind me.
She took a step backward, her warrior's instincts clearly on high alert for some reason.
I turned to look at what she was seeing, but all I saw were the deepening shadows between the ancient oaks.
The evening birds had gone quiet now and an unnatural stillness had settled over the training grounds.
The Warrior's Unrequited Love
I could see her heart pounding rapidly within her chest, the pulse visible in her neck.
She took another step backward, her eyes locked on the darkness between the trees.
The shadows seemed to be growing thicker, twisting and writhing like a living entity.
Without thinking, I took a step closer to where she stood, our shoulders almost touching now.
The air had grown thick and heavy, making it difficult to breathe.
Lyra's hand was trembling at her side, her knuckles white around the hilt of her sword.
It felt as though the darkness was alive and watching us, its malevolent presence palpable in the air.
Fighting against my own fear, I slowly reached out to touch Lyra's hand with mine.
"Eryndor, do you feel that?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, eyes still fixed on the shadows.
"Yes," I replied, my voice steady despite the fear clawing at my insides. "It's as if the darkness itself is watching us."
The Warrior's Unrequited Love
"Then we need to leave," she said urgently, her grip tightening around my hand.
I nodded, my heart pounding rapidly in my chest.
Together, we turned and began to sprint away from the training grounds, our boots pounding against the dirt path.
The shadows slithered between the trees beside us, keeping pace with us no matter how fast we ran.
I could feel their malevolent presence all around us, making it difficult to breathe.
Lyra's grip on my hand tightened as she stumbled slightly, her eyes darting to the ground where a tendril of darkness had reached out to brush against her ankle.
I pulled her closer, our shoulders bumping together as we wove through the forest.
The village lanterns flickered in the distance, but the shadows were gaining ground with every step.
A branch snapped behind us and Lyra stumbled again, her hand reaching out to grab onto my arm for support.
"Eryndor, they're getting closer," she gasped, her voice tinged with desperation as she regained her footing.
"We can't stop now," I urged, pulling her along as the shadows closed in around us.
The Warrior's Unrequited Love
"There's a clearing up ahead," she panted, determination flaring in her eyes. "We might have a chance if we make it there."
We burst into the moonlit clearing, our ragged breaths misting in the cold night air.
Lyra's hand remained locked in mine as we spun to face the encroaching darkness.
The shadows writhed at the edge of the clearing, held back by the silver moonlight that filtered through the trees above.
Lyra pressed against my side, her sword raised defensively as she watched the darkness writhe and twist around us.
I could feel her trembling, but it slowed as our breathing steadied together.
The Warrior's Unrequited Love
When she turned to check our surroundings, our eyes met.
The fear in her gaze softened for a moment, replaced by something warmer and more vulnerable.
She turned away before I could decipher what it was, her focus returning to the shadows as they began to coalesce into a darker mass at the treeline.
They seemed unwilling to cross into the moonlit clearing, but their presence felt like a physical weight pressing in around us.
My arms ached from holding my sword steady, and I noticed Lyra's blade wavering slightly.
She shifted her stance, imperceptibly moving closer until her arm brushed against mine.
The contact steadied us both, and she gave me a small smile before turning back to the shadows.
The darkness coalesced into a mass of swirling tendrils at the edge of the clearing, testing the boundary of the moonlight.
Without taking her eyes off of it, Lyra nodded once.
"Eryndor, do you see that?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the rustling leaves.
"Yes," I replied, my eyes narrowing as I focused on the shifting mass. "It's like it's waiting for something."
"Then we need to find out what," she said, determination hardening her voice.
