I was late to class again.
I walked into the room as the teacher was talking.
"Are you sure you want to do this, Ethan? It's not too late to change your mind."
I looked up at the clock on the wall.
It read 9:45.
"Are you kidding me? We're only five minutes in. Class doesn't even technically start until 10:00. I'm not late."
"Technically," Mrs. Linde repeated.
She was one of the teachers here at the only magic high school in the country.
Magic had become a learned skill rather than something passed down through blood about twenty years ago in Northern California in the 2020s.
Ever since then, magic schools had popped up all over the world.
Well, all over the world except for Northern California.
For some reason, there was only one magic high school here, and it was located right in the middle of Sacramento.
"You're not going to mark me tardy, are you?"
I asked sarcastically.
Mrs. Linde glared at me.
"I'm not sure yet. That's going to depend on how well you behave during the rest of class."
"I'm shocked," I said without any real emotion.
"Is that all you're going to say? You usually have so much more to add."
"I'm sure you're aware that we don't have many warlocks here at the school."
"There are no other warlocks here at the school."
I corrected her.
Mrs. Linde frowned at me.
The Warlock's Awakening
"There are no warlocks here at the school, Ethan. Only you."
She walked over to the whiteboard and started writing with a marker.
The heels of her shoes clicked against the linoleum floor as she moved.
I slumped into my usual seat at the back of the classroom and dropped my backpack on the floor with a thud.
The other students in class looked back at me, mostly mages and shamans.
I pulled out my notebook and pretended not to notice them staring at me.
Taro was two rows ahead of me on my left.
He turned around and gave me an awkward wave.
Mrs. Linde finished writing on the board and then stepped back to look at what she had written: Ethics in Warlock Magic
She cleared her throat and then began lecturing.
The Warlock's Awakening
"Magic is a powerful tool that can be used for good or bad. It's up to us to make sure that it's used for good. We have a responsibility to use our powers in an ethical way."
She looked over at me when she said this last part.
I drummed my fingers on the desk while she droned on about the "moral obligations of magical practitioners."
Her marker squeaked against the board as she listed examples of warlock spells gone wrong.
Behind me, someone whispered something about dark magic and corruption.
I caught Taro shifting uncomfortably in his seat, glancing between me and Mrs. Linde.
The morning sun through the classroom windows cast long shadows across my textbook, highlighting passages about "restraint" and "careful consideration."
The Warlock's Awakening
My hand shot up, fingers spread wide, as Mrs. Linde wrote another bullet point about ethical boundaries.
