Her encounter with Elijah Mikaelson brings unexpected challenges and emotions as she becomes entangled in his world. Despite the danger Elijah poses, Elena finds herself drawn to him and struggles with her feelings.
I was walking down the streets of Mystic Falls when I saw her.
She was standing in front of a shop, and when she turned around, her eyes caught mine for a second.
I froze.
My heart stopped beating for a second before it started again, and my eyes were glued to hers.
It couldn't be...
But then again, it couldn't not be.
The girl that stood in front of me looked exactly like Katerina Petrova, the same fire in her eyes, the same lips, the same hair...
Everything about her screamed Katerina to me, but then again, I knew that it couldn't be her.
Katrina had died centuries ago after my dear brother had killed her in a fit of rage.
Or maybe he wasn't as angry as he seemed to be.
Maybe Klaus had his reasons for doing what he did that night, and I still didn't know what those reasons were.
However, it didn't matter now; what mattered was this girl.
I took a huge step toward her and reached out my hand to touch her face.
I had to make sure that she was real and not some figment of my imagination.
But then again, even if she was just my imagination, I would still be able to feel her like I would with any other human.
"Hey!"
I withdrew my hand slowly, studying her face with careful precision.
Her reaction was enough to tell me that she wasn't Katerina.
The girl didn't have the same calculated grace that Katerina had, and her voice didn't have the same manipulative undertones.
She looked like a scared rabbit, backing away from me with genuine confusion instead of practiced deception.
I adjusted my suit jacket and stood at a respectable distance from her.
"Forgive my forwardness. I'm Elijah Mikaelson."
The girl's heart rate increased at the mention of my name, and I knew that she knew of me.
Before she could say anything, Stefan Salvatore appeared beside her and positioned himself between us, his eyes flashing with hostility.
I maintained my composure and didn't let his hostility affect me.
I had seen enough of his kind to know that they were all the same.
Stefan's muscles tensed, ready to attack me at a moment's notice, but he didn't move.
He was waiting for the girl to make a move, and I could see the fear in her eyes as she peered around him.
The street lamp above us cast shadows on our faces, and the passing cars created a buffer of ambient noise that drowned out the sound of her heartbeat.
Stefan's hand was slightly trembling, and I knew that he knew who I was and what I was capable of doing.
He had positioned himself between me and the girl just like I had positioned myself between Klaus and Katerina all those years ago.
"Miss Gilbert," I said, addressing the girl directly.
She flinched at my address of her, but she held my gaze.
It was clear that she wasn't Katerina; she didn't have the same cunning or manipulative nature that Katerina had possessed.
She looked like a scared little girl who was trapped in a world she didn't know. I took a step back and raised my hands in a gesture of peace before turning around to leave.
The girl's heart rate slowly returned to normal, but Stefan's stayed fast paced as he watched me walk away.
I could hear his voice from afar as he called out to me, but I didn't turn around.
I kept walking until I reached the end of the street before turning around to look at them.
