"They have come."
I said to the guests sitting around the table.
"They've sent their men to find me."
The Sultan chuckled, his eyes crinkling at the edges.
"Where are they, Count?" John Ward asked.
"Oh...they're right here."
The Sultan chuckled.
"They're within the confines of the castle."
"Why didn't you tell me before, Sultan?"
I asked, looking at him.
He knew they were here and he didn't tell me?
The Sultan smiled, his eyes glinting with amusement.
"Because you already knew, Vladimir Dracula."
"Of course."
I said with a smile.
"Very well," I said to the guests.
"Let's finish this meal. We have talked enough war for tonight, don't you think?"
Everyone agreed and we finished the meal in silence.
The night was cold and dark as I stepped out of the dining room and onto the balcony.
It was a calm night.
The waves were not too high against the rocks and there was a half moon in the sky.
The Vampire's Castle
I gripped the stone railing, my senses heightened as I listened for any whisper of movement below.
The courtyard stretched before me, its familiar paths now seeming treacherous and full of hidden threats.
A torch flickered near the stables, casting dancing shadows that could conceal my hunters.
I caught the scent of gunpowder and oil - weapons recently cleaned.
They're being careful, these men, moving with practiced stealth through my domain.
The Vampire's Castle
My eyes traced the perimeter wall, following the guard route they must take.
Somewhere in the darkness a loose stone shifted.
I turned away, knowing the game had already begun.
From my vantage point on the balcony, I tracked their movement through sound and scent.
Boots scraped against stone as they wove through the lower corridors, the acrid smell of gunpowder growing stronger with each passing moment.
Six distinct heartbeats echoed in my mind, methodically checking each room in a search that would ultimately prove futile.
The half moon cast enough light for me to see two figures crossing the courtyard toward the western wing.
I stepped away from the railing, my footsteps silent on the marble floor.
The Vampire's Castle
The grand staircase loomed ahead, its shadows offering the perfect cover for my descent into the darkness below.
I took the stairs in calculated steps, my boots making no sound on the worn stone.
The air was heavy with the scent of old books and dust, a familiar perfume that masked any other smells.
I pressed myself against the cold wall, listening as the hunters moved below me.
Their heartbeats grew louder, three men approaching from the east corridor.
Leather boots scraped against the floor, a rhythmic beat that heralded their arrival.
I edged toward the spot I knew so well, where a loose stone marked the entrance to my secret passage.
The lantern light flickered at the base of the stairs, casting long shadows that stretched like skeletal fingers.
"Do you think they'll find it, Count?" a voice whispered from the shadows beside me.
"No," I replied, my voice barely audible over the distant echo of footsteps.
"Then we have the advantage," the voice continued, a hint of relief coloring its tone.
