Mermaids, who would have thought they existed?
Well, they did and I was one of them.
Along with my two other sisters, Nixie and Sirena.
We were cast out of our pod and forced to live on land.
New Orleans, to be exact.
It wasn’t so bad once you got used to it.
But sometimes I wished I could go back to the ocean just to feel weightless again.
To be free.
But that was never going to happen.
So I made the best of my situation and explored the city with my sisters.
"Look, a parade."
I heard Nixie say as she grabbed my arm and pulled me in the direction of the noise.
I smiled as I saw all the colors and lights.
There were floats and people dancing in the streets.
I couldn’t help but move my body to the beat of the music.
It was infectious.
"Wow, this is great," Sirena said as she clapped her hands.
I couldn’t help but agree with her.
This was definitely a highlight of my day.
As I looked around at all the people having fun, I noticed three men standing on the sidelines watching us.
They were tall with broad shoulders and muscled arms.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
I led my sisters through the crowd, pretending not to notice them, but I could feel their eyes on us.
I kept track of them in my peripheral vision.
They were following us, but keeping their distance.
The music grew fainter as we walked away from the parade and turned down a quieter street lined with historic buildings.
The men followed behind us, their footsteps echoing on the cobblestones.
I led my sisters into a dimly lit café and took a seat at a table near the back exit.
Through the window, I watched the men pause outside, talking in low voices.
One of them pulled out a phone and dialed a number.
My heart raced as I recognized the name "Klaus" in their conversation.
"Nixie, did you hear that?" I whispered, leaning closer to her.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
"Yeah, Klaus is the one who banished us," Nixie replied, her eyes narrowing with a mix of fear and anger.
Sirena leaned in, her voice barely above a whisper, "Do you think he's found out about the amulet?"
Through the café's window, I watched Klaus's men disperse into the crowd.
My sisters huddled closer to me as I sketched out a plan on a napkin.
Earlier that week, we'd observed Hope practicing magic alone in Lafayette Cemetery.
"She's different from the others," I whispered, marking her usual routes on my crude map.
Nixie suggested befriending Hope during her solitary practice sessions, while Sirena calculated the moon phases when our powers were least detectable.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
I circled the cemetery on the napkin and added tomorrow's date.
"We need to approach her carefully," Nixie said, tapping the napkin with a finger.
"Agreed, but what if she senses our true nature?" Sirena asked, glancing nervously at the door.
"Then we'll have to convince her that helping us is in her best interest," I replied, determination hardening my voice.
I led my sisters through the darkening streets, checking my watch to ensure we arrived at Lafayette Cemetery during Hope's usual practice time.
The air was cool and carried hints of magic, suggesting Hope was already there.
We crouched behind a large tomb, watching as she channeled her power into a spell.
Nixie shifted beside me, her discomfort evident as Hope's magic intensified, causing our amulets to vibrate.
Sirena started to back away, but I grabbed her arm.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
"We can't waste this chance," I whispered urgently.
Hope paused her spell, her head tilted as if sensing our presence.
"I know you're there," she called out, her voice steady and commanding.
"Show yourselves."
I stepped out first, motioning for my sisters to stay back.
Hope's eyes narrowed as I emerged from behind the tomb, her hands still raised from her spell casting.
The cemetery air crackled with residual magic as I took slow steps toward her.
My amulet grew warmer against my chest, reacting to Hope's power.
"We mean no harm," I said, keeping my voice steady despite the racing of my heart.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
Hope maintained her defensive stance but didn't attack.
Nixie and Sirena reluctantly joined me, forming a triangle as we faced the young witch-vampire.
Our amulets pulsed in sync, and Hope's eyes fixed on them with recognition.
Her eyes widened, and she lowered her defensive stance.
"Those amulets - I've seen drawings of them in my grandmother's grimoire," she said, taking a step closer.
I instinctively backed away, but Hope raised her hands in a gesture of peace.
"Come with me. My family needs to know about this."
My heart pounded as I exchanged worried glances with my sisters.
We followed Hope through the winding cobblestone streets of the French Quarter.
The amulets around our necks grew heavier with each step, as if sensing the weight of our uncertain fate.
We stopped before a massive mansion, its iron gates adorned with symbols of protection and magic.
Hope pushed the gates open, and they creaked ominously as we stepped inside.
The mansion's interior was a labyrinth of ancient artifacts and mysterious relics.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
Hope led us to a study filled with dusty tomes and strange devices that hummed with power.
She motioned for us to wait, then disappeared down a dark hallway.
My sisters and I exchanged nervous glances, the silence of the room amplifying our unease.
"Do you think we can trust her?" Nixie whispered, her eyes darting to the shadows.
"We don't have much choice," Sirena replied softly, her voice laced with both fear and resolve.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
I stood with my sisters, running my fingers over the spines of ancient spell books that lined the shelves.
The air was heavy with the scent of old parchment and forgotten knowledge.
Suddenly, the floorboards outside the room creaked, signaling someone's approach.
A woman with long, dark hair appeared in the doorway.
Her eyes were sharp and commanding, filled with a power that made my heart skip a beat.
"Bonnie," Hope's voice echoed from behind her, "these are the ones I told you about."
The woman stepped into the room, her gaze fixed intently on us.
Her presence was both captivating and intimidating, like a storm brewing on the horizon.
She raised a hand slightly, as if sensing the air around us.
My sisters shifted closer to me, forming our protective triangle once more.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
I could feel their fear and uncertainty radiating off them like heat.
The woman took another step forward, her eyes narrowing as she studied us.
I felt an invisible probing sensation, as if she were testing the magical barriers around our amulets.
The air seemed to vibrate with tension as she moved closer. My grip on my amulet tightened instinctively, feeling its warmth intensify under her scrutiny.
The woman's gaze shifted between us, her eyes lingering on each of us in turn.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
I could sense her power coursing through the room, like a river of magic flowing around us.
She raised her hand again, this time more deliberately.
As she did so, I felt a surge of energy emanating from her palm, like a wave crashing against our defenses.
I watch helplessly as Elijah rounds the corner with a crystal water pitcher, his eyes fixed on the door.
He doesn't see Nixie until it's too late.
The pitcher collides directly with her, splashing water across her chest and arms.
Droplets run down her neck, soaking into the fabric of her shirt.
Nixie's eyes widen in panic as she clutches her throat, the familiar tingling sensation beginning.
I grab her arm, scanning the hallway frantically for a solution.
Ten feet away, I spot a bathroom door slightly ajar.
Sirena creates a distraction by knocking over a nearby vase, drawing everyone's attention away from Nixie.
I take advantage of the momentary chaos to rush Nixie toward the bathroom.
Elijah calls out apologetically, but we can't stop.
Nixie's legs begin to wobble, and I shove her through the bathroom door just as her body starts to go limp.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
I drag her inside just in time, as her legs morph into a tail.
Sirena stands guard at the door while I help Nixie onto the edge of the bathtub.
Her eyes are wide with fear as she struggles to catch her breath.
I can hear Elijah's footsteps approaching, his voice calling out to us.
I whisper to Nixie to stay calm, hoping that Elijah won't notice anything out of the ordinary.
Sirena peeks through the crack in the door, watching as Elijah hesitates in the hallway before finally leaving.
I sigh in relief, but then I hear him calling for everyone to gather in the living room.
Nixie's grip on my hand tightens as we realize our secret might be exposed.
I quickly wrap a towel around Nixie and help her back into her human form.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
I lead her out of the bathroom and into the living room, where the entire Mikaelson family is waiting.
They're all seated in a semi-circle, their eyes fixed intently on us.
Klaus leans forward, his voice sharp as he demands to know who we are and why we're here.
I can feel their eyes boring into us as they wait for an answer.
Nixie grips my hand tightly, while Sirena stands slightly behind us, her eyes scanning the room for any possible escape route.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
I take a deep breath and step forward, meeting Klaus's gaze head-on.
My voice is steady as I speak.
"We are mermaids, exiled from our pod."
Klaus's eyes narrow, his jaw clenches in anger.
Nixie's grip on my hand tightens, and I can feel her trembling beside me.
The room falls silent as the Mikaelsons process my revelation.
I can see the shock and confusion etched on their faces.
Elijah's expression softens slightly, but Klaus remains tense, his eyes fixed intently on me.
Sirena shifts nervously behind us, ready to bolt if necessary.
I continue to explain our situation, telling them about our journey to New Orleans and our struggle to remain hidden in the city.
I explain how we've been living in secret, always looking over our shoulders for fear of being discovered.
Klaus's voice cuts through the silence, cold and calculating.
"And why should we trust you, m###s who hide in s###s?"
Nixie takes a shaky breath, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Because we have information about the witch coven threatening your family."
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
Klaus rises from his seat, pacing back and forth across the room.
His eyes dart between us, weighing our words.
Nixie's grip on my hand tightens, her eyes fixed on the vampires before us.
Sirena shifts uneasily behind us, ready to flee at a moment's notice.
Klaus stops pacing and looks at Stefan, then back at me.
His voice is low and deliberate as he speaks.
"Perhaps there is a way for us to help each other."
He pauses, his eyes locked on mine.
"We could adopt you as our daughters. You, Nixie, would become Elijah's. And you," he turns his gaze to me, "would become Stefan's."
The room falls silent once more as we process his words.
I stand there, my mind reeling with the implications of his words.
I glance at Nixie and Sirena, trying to gauge their reactions.
Nixie's eyes are wide with uncertainty, while Sirena's brow furrows in concentration.
Klaus continues to watch us intently, waiting for our response.
I take a deep breath and speak.
"May we have a moment to discuss this proposal?"
Klaus nods, gesturing for us to step aside.
We move to a quiet corner of the room, out of earshot of the Mikaelsons.
I turn to my sisters, my voice barely above a whisper.
"This could be our chance to find a place where we belong."
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
Sirena shakes her head, her voice filled with doubt.
"But what if they're just using us? What if they don't truly care about us?"
Nixie bites her lip, her eyes filled with fear.
"I don't want to lose who I am. I don't want to be bound to someone else."
I place a hand on her shoulder, trying to reassure her.
"We can always leave if things don't work out. But we have to at least consider it."
Sirena nods slowly, her expression softening.
"You're right. We have to think about our future."
I take a deep breath and lead them back to Klaus.
"We appreciate your offer," I say, meeting his gaze once more.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
"May we have a day to consider it?"
Klaus nods, his lips curling into a small smile.
We sit at the grand mahogany desk in the Mikaelson study, surrounded by the opulent furnishings and ancient artifacts that adorn the room.
Stefan and Elijah sit across from us, their eyes fixed on the documents laid out before them.
My sisters flank me, our hands clasped together beneath the table.
The scratching of the pen against the paper fills the room with an almost deafening sound.
When it's our turn, I take the pen first, my hand trembling ever so slightly as I sign my new name - Lyla Salvatore.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
Nixie becomes a Mikaelson under Elijah's care, while Sirena joins me as Stefan's daughter.
Elijah leans back in his chair, his voice calm and reassuring.
"You'll find that our family can be quite protective of those we care for."
Stefan nods, adding with a hint of warmth, "And we'll ensure you have the freedom to be yourselves, not just who we want you to be."
I lean against the window of my bedroom, gazing out into the night.
The garden below is bathed in moonlight, the flowers swaying gently in the breeze.
Matt stands behind the garden hedge, his hand raised in a silent wave.
He's my secret boyfriend, someone I met through Nixie.
I've been careful to keep him hidden from the prying eyes of Stefan and Elijah.
Nixie signals to me from her room across the hall, her hand waving furiously as she mouths "the coast is clear" through her window.
Every Thursday evening, Stefan and Elijah retreat to their weekly family meeting, leaving me with a small window of freedom.
I carefully open my bedroom door, ensuring it doesn't creak and alert anyone to my departure.
I make my way to the trellis that leads down to the garden below.
The wooden slats are weathered and worn, but they provide a sturdy path for me to climb down. I begin my descent, my heart pounding in my chest as I lower myself from one rung to the next.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
Twigs snap beneath my feet, and I freeze momentarily, fearing that someone will hear me.
But no one comes running, so I continue downward until my feet finally touch the soft earth of the garden path.
I sprint toward the hedge where Matt waits for me.
Just as I'm about to reach him, I hear Stefan's voice calling out from his balcony above.
"Lyla!" he shouts, his tone laced with a hint of urgency.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
I freeze mid-step, caught between running to Matt and answering Stefan's call.
Matt quickly ducks behind a nearby tree, hiding from view.
I freeze halfway between Matt's hiding spot and the mansion, my bare feet cold against the damp grass.
Turning slowly, I tilt my head up to see Stefan's silhouette on the balcony, his vampire eyes piercing through the darkness.
My fingers fidget with the hem of my shirt as I search for words.
Behind me, I hear Matt's subtle footsteps retreating further into the shadows.
Stefan's grip tightens on the balcony railing, the wood creaking under his strength.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
When he asks where I'm going at this hour, I open my mouth to respond, but my throat feels dry.
I pace nervously in my room, the sound of my footsteps echoing off the walls.
The clock ticks away, each passing minute bringing me closer to the family dinner that I dread.
My stomach twists into knots at the thought of facing Stefan after he caught me sneaking out to see Matt.
I can hear muffled voices coming from downstairs, the hushed tones of Stefan, Klaus, Elijah, and Damon discussing something in hushed whispers.
I strain my ears to listen, but their words are indistinguishable.
Suddenly, Nixie slips into my room, her eyes wide with worry.
"They're talking about us," she whispers urgently.
"About how we've been acting suspiciously lately."
My heart races as I realize what this means.
They must have discovered our secret meetings with Matt and Sirena's mysterious phone calls.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
Nixie's voice trembles as she continues, "They know about your garden incident and how I've been sneaking out to the Quarter. And they're wondering why Sirena has been getting so many strange phone calls."
I feel a surge of panic rising within me.
What if they discover everything?
What will happen to us then? We creep out of my room and make our way to the top of the stairs, peeking over the banister to see our fathers gathered in the living room below.
They're all seated on plush couches, their faces illuminated by the soft glow of table lamps.
Klaus holds up a crumpled piece of paper in his hand, his eyes scanning it intently before he passes it to Stefan.
Stefan takes it and examines it closely before looking up at us with a mixture of confusion and concern etched on his face.
"I found this note in Lyla's room," he says, his voice tinged with worry.
"It seems she's been sneaking out to meet someone named Matt."
Elijah's brow furrows as he looks at Nixie and me with a questioning gaze.
"Do either of you know anything about this?"
Nixie and I exchange nervous glances before shaking our heads in unison.
"No," we say simultaneously, trying to keep our voices steady despite the fear welling up inside us. As we watch from above, Klaus leans forward in his seat, his eyes fixed intently on Stefan as he speaks.
"I've noticed some strange activity around here lately," he says, his voice low and serious.
"Things that don't quite add up."
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
Stefan sighs, rubbing his temples as he processes Klaus's words.
"We need to get to the bottom of this before it spirals out of control," he says, glancing at Elijah for support.
Elijah nods thoughtfully, his gaze shifting between Klaus and Stefan. "Perhaps it's time we have an honest conversation with the girls."
Klaus stands up, his tall frame towering over the others as he looks around the room.
"Then let us do it now," he declares, his voice filled with determination.
We all sit in the Mikaelson's formal dining room, the long table stretching out before us like a canvas of fine china and polished silverware.
The chandelier above casts a warm glow, illuminating the faces of our fathers as they prepare to make an announcement.
Klaus stands at the head of the table, his eyes scanning the room as he begins to speak.
"As you all know, we have been raising Hope, Lyla, Nixie, and Sirena as our own," he says, his voice filled with a mix of love and authority.
"But today, we have decided to make it official."
He pauses for a moment, letting his words sink in before continuing.
"From now on, Hope will be known as my daughter. Lyla will be Stefan's. Nixie will be Elijah's. And Sirena will be Damon's."
Damon raises an eyebrow at this last declaration, clearly surprised by the addition of Sirena to his family.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
But Klaus explains that it was necessary to spread us among trusted family members in order to ensure our safety and protection. As Klaus finishes speaking, I glance over at Sirena, who sits rigidly in her chair beside me.
Her eyes are fixed on Damon, who is now standing next to her with an awkward smile plastered on his face.
I can sense her unease as she tries to process this sudden change in her life.
Under the table, I reach out and squeeze her hand reassuringly.
She squeezes back tightly, her fingers trembling slightly as she tries to hold back tears.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
Across from us, Hope sits with a bright smile on her face as she looks at Klaus with adoration.
As the weight of Klaus's words settles over us, I realize that our lives have just been irrevocably altered.
We sit in Freya's garden, the warm sunlight casting a golden glow over the lush greenery and vibrant flowers.
Our adoptive mothers, Elena, Bonnie, and Hayley, join us for afternoon tea, their laughter mingling with ours as we sip our delicate china cups filled with steaming chamomile.
Sirena sits beside me, her eyes still wide with worry as she recounts her encounter with Damon earlier that day.
"He saw me texting someone," she whispers urgently, her voice trembling slightly.
"He asked me who it was, but I didn't know what to say."
Elena reaches out and places a comforting hand on Sirena's shoulder.
"Don't worry," she says softly.
"We'll figure this out together."
Bonnie leans forward in her chair, her eyes fixed intently on Nixie.
"I saw you sneaking off to the library yesterday," she says gently.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
"Was there something you needed to find?"
Nixie nods sheepishly, her cheeks flushing slightly as she admits to following Elijah to the Quarter.
Hayley smiles knowingly at this revelation.
"I know how it feels to be followed by a Mikaelson," she says wryly.
"But don't worry, we'll help you navigate this situation."
As we chat and laugh together, I can't help but feel grateful for these strong women who have become like mothers to us. But then Hayley mentions that Klaus has been tracking Hope's phone activity, and I realize that our fathers are more involved in our lives than we thought.
I glance at Freya nervously, wondering if she knows anything about Stefan catching me with Matt in the garden.
Freya notices my unease and leans forward in her chair.
"What is it?" she asks softly.
I take a deep breath before confessing everything to her - from sneaking out to see Matt to getting caught by Stefan on the balcony.
Freya listens attentively, her eyes widening slightly as I recount my story.
When I finish speaking, she glances at Elena and Bonnie, who exchange knowing looks with each other.
It's clear that they've had similar experiences with the overprotective Mikaelson men in their lives.
Freya leans forward again, her voice dropping to a whisper as she speaks directly to us.
"Don't worry," she says reassuringly.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
"You must be careful," she warns, her eyes flickering with concern.
"Their intentions are good, but they can be relentless when it comes to our safety."
Elena nods in agreement, adding, "And if they suspect anything, they'll stop at nothing to uncover the truth."
We all sit on the living room couch, watching our fathers pace back and forth in front of us.
Klaus holds my phone with Matt's messages displayed on the screen.
Damon grips Sirena's diary tightly in his hand.
Stefan's jaw clenches as he pulls out his phone and shows us screenshots of my social media accounts.
Elijah stands there with Nixie's hidden letters clutched in his grasp.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
The room is heavy with silence as Klaus slowly approaches us, his steps measured and deliberate.
I reach for Nixie's hand, seeking comfort in her presence.
Damon slams Sirena's diary down on the coffee table, causing us all to jump in surprise.
Stefan moves to block the doorway, making it clear that we're not leaving until we've explained everything.
Klaus stops in front of us, his gaze fixed intently on Matt, who stands nervously in the foyer.
Stefan and Elijah flank him on either side, their eyes darkening with intensity.
Damon paces behind them, his movements fluid and predatory.
"Explain," Klaus demands, his voice low and commanding.
Matt swallows hard, his hands shaking slightly as he begins to speak.
"We...we just wanted to hang out," he stammers, his voice trembling.
"But we knew you wouldn't approve."
Klaus steps closer to Matt, moving with vampire speed.
I start to rise from the couch, but Nixie grabs my hand and pulls me back down.
"Don't," she whispers urgently.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
Matt's eyes widen in fear as Klaus looms over him.
"You're lying," Klaus growls, his voice dripping with menace.
"Tell us the truth."
Matt takes a step back, his eyes darting between our fathers.
"We...we were going to meet other supernatural teens," he admits, his voice barely above a whisper. Stefan's eyes flash with anger at this revelation.
He advances towards Matt, causing him to stumble backward until he hits the wall.
Elijah follows close behind, his face twisted into a scowl of disapproval.
Matt cowers against the wall, his voice shaking as he continues to explain.
"We wanted to learn more about our kind," he pleads, his words spilling out in a desperate rush.
"But you never let us. You always kept us isolated."
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
Klaus's expression hardens into a mask of fury as he turns towards us.
I watch as his eyes flicker between rage and worry.
Stefan's jaw clenches tightly, his gaze darting between Matt and me.
Elijah's protective stance softens slightly at the mention of other supernatural teens.
Damon moves closer to Sirena, placing a hand on her shoulder.
The tension in the room shifts from anger to something deeper - a fear of losing us.
The Vampire Diaries: Mermaids
Stefan catches my eye, and I see the same expression he had when signing my adoption papers.
"You're not prisoners," he finally says, his voice barely audible, "but you are our family."
