The love of my life is a woman I can never have.
Even though her love for me is as deep as mine is for her.
She has a family—a partner she’s been with since she was sixteen and a daughter who looks just like her.
I can’t have her, but I need to be near her.
So, I take the job at her law firm.
The first time our eyes meet, something inside me shifts.
I know something special is unfolding.
It’s as if I’ve known her before.
As if we’ve loved before.
It’s this deep, all-consuming sense of familiarity and comfort.
I think back to that first day we met and wonder if things would have been different if I had just mustered the courage to talk to her sooner.
Would she have smiled at me?
Inviting me to lunch?
Maybe even to her bed?
I’ll never know now.
The Unwanted Affair
I rehearse what I’m going to say while organizing some case files at my desk.
Every now and then, I steal a glance through the glass partition that separates our offices.
She’s sitting at her desk, reviewing some documents.
Her dark hair falls forward as she makes notes on the file in front of her.
She looks up and catches me staring at her.
My heart stops for a moment when she smiles.
I force myself to walk to her office.
Standing in her doorway, I clear my throat to announce my presence.
She looks up from the file she’s reading, and I ask if she’d like to grab lunch with me today.
There’s a slight pause before she agrees.
The Unwanted Affair
She gathers her things and walks past me toward the elevator. We stand closer than necessary in the elevator, our shoulders almost touching as we descend to the lobby.
"I've been meaning to talk to you about something," she says softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
I swallow hard, trying to keep my composure. "Is it about us?" I ask, my heart pounding in anticipation.
She nods, her eyes searching mine. "I can't stop thinking about what it would be like if things were different."
After our elevator confession, we find a quiet corner in the office courtyard.
The sounds of the bustling city fade into the background as we sit together, our shoulders touching.
She sits close enough that I can feel her warmth, and my skin tingles at the proximity.
We talk about our feelings, and she tells me about the instant connection she felt when we first met.
"I knew there was something special about you," she says, her voice trembling slightly.
I reach for her hand, wanting to feel her touch, but before our fingers meet, her phone buzzes in her pocket.
She pulls it out, and the screen lights up with her partner's name.
She stares at it for a moment, frozen in indecision.
The ringtone echoes through the courtyard, breaking the peaceful atmosphere.
She looks up at me, her eyes filled with a mix of sadness and regret.
The Unwanted Affair
"Sorry," she mouths before answering the call.
As she talks, her voice is steady, but I can see the conflict in her eyes.
I wait patiently, trying to ignore the ache in my chest, until she finally hangs up.
"I'm sorry," she says, her voice barely audible. "It's just... so complicated."
In the courtyard, I watch as her hands tremble slightly as she puts her phone away.
The late afternoon sun casts long shadows across her face, illuminating the contours of her features.
She stares at the ground, avoiding my gaze.
Neither of us moves away; our shoulders are still pressed together on the narrow bench.
The sounds of traffic and distant office chatter fade into the background as I focus on her uneven breathing.
She shifts slightly, her knee brushing against mine, but doesn't pull away.
The tension builds with each passing second until I can't bear it anymore.
"I can't keep pretending everything's fine," I say, my voice breaking the silence.
She looks up, her eyes filled with unshed tears. "I don't want to pretend either, but what choice do we have?"
I take a deep breath, feeling the weight of her words. "We could choose us, even if it's just for a moment."
