Every day, I strain my imagination to come up with ways to get food.
As a pig, I would like to run out into the open and find some tasty morsels, but I know that won’t work.
I am too small right now, and while my imagination is grand, I am not prepared to defend myself if I need to.
Every morning, I wake up, stretch my legs and neck, take a deep breath and head out to forage.
I walk through the forest slowly and carefully, listening and looking for anything that might give me a clue as to where I might find something to eat.
My favorite thing to do is to follow Squeaky, the brave and friendly squirrel.
He has no idea that I am watching him, but he always seems to be able to find the best things to eat.
He never appears to be looking for food, which makes it all the more interesting.
He will be climbing along a branch, or jumping from limb to limb, and then he will stop and dig into a hole in the tree bark.
When he does this, I wait quietly and watch as he pulls out some type of insect or larva from the hole.
The Unstoppable Duo
I crouch behind a thick fern and watch as Squeaky hops from branch to branch, his tail flicking back and forth.
He stops at a gnarled old oak tree, his tail twitching as he sniffs the bark.
I edge closer, my hooves sinking into the damp earth.
I am careful not to step on any twigs or leaves that might snap or crunch under my feet.
Squeaky digs into a small crevice in the bark of the tree, his tiny paws moving quickly.
The Unstoppable Duo
He pulls out something round and brown - an acorn!
He stuffs it into his cheek and scampers higher up the tree.
I memorize the spot where he found the acorn, noting that there is a heart-shaped patch of moss below the hole.
After a few minutes, Squeaky bounds away, and I tiptoe over to the tree.
I stop at the base of the tree, my ears perked up and my hooves pressed into the earth.
I can feel the dampness of the ground seeping into my skin.
I approach the oak tree slowly, my eyes fixed on the heart-shaped patch of moss.
It is a lighter green than the rest of the moss that grows on the tree, and it is smooth and round.
The moss is nestled in a small depression in the bark.
I reach forward with my snout and gently press on the edge of the moss.
It peels away easily, revealing a dark opening in the trunk of the tree.
There is a faint smell coming from inside - something musty and earthy.
I can’t quite make out what it is - nuts?
Berries?
The Unstoppable Duo
I stretch my neck forward, trying to see inside the hole.
My eyes are not able to make out much in the darkness.
The smell is stronger now, and I am curious about what could be inside.
I squint into the hole, trying to see anything that might be lurking inside. I bump my snout against something solid - it feels like a smooth tunnel wall.
The tunnel must go deeper into the tree.
The Unstoppable Duo
I take a deep breath and wedge my head into the opening, feeling the bark scratch against my skin.
The tunnel curves downward slightly, so I have to push myself forward to get farther inside.
