I was in love with my best friend.
There, I said it.
Finally.
After all these years, I found the courage to actually say it out loud, even if it’s only to myself.
But here’s the catch.
I have a girlfriend.
And not just any girlfriend.
A girlfriend I’ve been with for three whole years.
And if that wasn’t messed up enough, I’ve had a thing for my best friend since… well…
since I knew what my thing was.
It’s weird, right?
That I’m still with Emily when I feel this way for Alex.
But it’s not like I can just call it quits after three whole years.
Plus, I really care for her.
I do.
It’s just…
Alex is Alex.
My stomach does things when he smiles at me, let alone when he touches me, which is more often than he’ll ever know.
And I’ve tried looking at other guys.
There have been plenty of opportunities over the years.
But none of them held a candle to Alex.
They just didn’t.
And it’s not like I can tell him this.
No.That would be a disaster waiting to happen.
He’d freak out on me and then where would we be?
I couldn’t lose him.
Not Alex.
So I do what any other teenage boy would do in my situation.
I pretend.
I pretend that everything is okay.
That nothing is wrong.
The Unspoken Truth
I sit in my car, gripping the steering wheel until my knuckles turn white.
I’m parked outside Emily’s house, staring up at her bedroom window.
Her silhouette moves around behind the closed curtains, probably getting ready for our usual Friday movie night.
My phone buzzes on the passenger seat next to me.
I know who it is without even looking.
Alex.
He’s probably texting to confirm tomorrow’s plans.
I silence it and shove it into my pocket.
I can’t think about him right now.
I need to focus on Emily.
The Unspoken Truth
Taking a few deep breaths, I finally get out of the car and walk up to her front door.
Each step feels heavier than the last, but I make myself do it anyway.
"Hey, you okay?" Emily asks as she opens the door, her eyes searching mine with a hint of concern.
"Yeah, just... a lot on my mind," I reply, forcing a smile that doesn't quite reach my eyes.
"Is it about Alex?" she presses gently, her voice soft but knowing.
The Unspoken Truth
I shrug, trying to brush it off.
"He's just... different lately."
Emily nods sympathetically, her eyes still studying mine.
"You guys have been acting really weird around each other. Ever since that night at the lake."
I swallow hard, avoiding her gaze.
"That was nothing," I mutter, my voice barely above a whisper.
She steps closer, her hand reaching out to touch my arm.
"Lance, is there something you need to tell me?" she asks softly, her eyes searching mine with growing concern.
My phone buzzes again in my pocket, another text from Alex.
I can feel Emily’s eyes on me, sensing the tension between us.

The Unspoken Truth
I turn my phone face-down on the table, my hands shaking slightly as I try to steady myself.
"Lance?"
Emily says again, her voice a little stronger now.
"Is everything okay?"
