I am Emily, a little girl who is five years old.
I live in New Jersey.
My parents died in a car crash when I was four years old.
The Unpopular Girl
I have a dog named Bingo.
He is a golden retriever with brown fur and white skin.
I love my dog very much.
After the car crash, I had no one to take care of me.
Luckily, my four beautiful teachers, Miss Sue, Miss Janet, Miss Maria, and Miss Daniela took me under their care.
The Unpopular Girl
The Unpopular Girl
They are all very kind and nice to me.
They have long brown hair, nice white skin, and beautiful smiles.
They always wear teacher outfits: white tops, blue or black jackets, and black pants or black leggings.
Miss Sue has a white T-shirt, a black jacket, and black pants.
The Unpopular Girl
Miss Janet has a white T-shirt, a light blue jacket, and black pants.
Miss Maria has a white top, a blue jacket, and black pants.
The Unpopular Girl

I love them very much because they are very kind to me.
They teach me at Tuckahoe Middle School in New Jersey.
I love going to school because I get to learn new things every day.
Today is my first day of going to school alone without any supervision from my teachers.
The Unpopular Girl
I walk down the empty hallway with my pink backpack on my back.
My footsteps echo against the lockers.
Miss Sue is behind me.
She is not wearing her teacher outfit today.
She is wearing a blue T-shirt and black pants.
I am not sure why she is not wearing her teacher outfit today.
I stop in front of the classroom door and turn around to look at Miss Sue.
She smiles at me and says, "Okay, Emily, we are here. Now go inside."
I nod my head and turn to face the classroom door again.
I stand there for a while but don't move.
The Unpopular Girl
Miss Sue asks, "Emily, what's wrong?"
I don't answer her question; instead, I keep looking at the floor tiles.
Miss Sue walks over to me and kneels beside me.
She asks me, "Remember our morning routine? What do we do first when we get to school?"
I nod my head but still don't move.
Miss Sue says, "Okay, let's do it together. First, we go inside and say good morning to Miss Janet. Then we put our backpacks in the cubbyholes. After that, we wash our hands and have breakfast. Then we go to the bathroom. Finally, we sit on the carpet and wait for the other kids to arrive." I nod my head again but still don't move.
Miss Sue says, "Okay, let's go inside."
I still don't move.
Miss Sue stands up and walks over to the window of the classroom door.
She looks inside and then turns back to me and says, "Miss Janet is already inside setting up today's activities. Let's go inside."
I still don't move; instead, I keep looking at the floor tiles.
Suddenly, I start tapping my fingers against my thigh.
Miss Sue notices this and says, "Emily, you're getting anxious."
I nod my head but still keep tapping my fingers against my thigh.
Miss Sue reaches into her pocket and pulls out a laminated card from her pocket.
The Unpopular Girl
I observe Miss Sue kneel down to my eye level.
I am still tapping my fingers against my thigh.
My eyes dart between the classroom door and the floor.
Now I am not tapping my fingers against my thigh; instead, I am fidgeting with the hem of my pink skirt.
The hallway is quiet except for the sound of my shoes scuffing against the tile.
Miss Sue slowly extends her arms, giving me time to process her gesture.
When I don't back away, she wraps me in a gentle embrace, careful not to squeeze too tight.
"You're braver than you think," she whispers in my ear.
I pull back slightly and look at her, "But what if they don't like me?"
Miss Sue smiles softly, "Emily, you have a heart full of kindness, and that's something everyone will see."
The Unpopular Girl
I nod slowly, feeling a little more confident, "Okay, I'll try my best."
I observe as my small shoulders relax a bit.
Miss Sue continues to hold me.
The Unpopular Girl
My fingers stop tapping against my thigh, and I lean into her embrace.
The Unpopular Girl
My thin arms wrap around Miss Sue's neck, my jean jacket bunching up as I press closer.

Miss Sue keeps the hug gentle, patting my back in a steady rhythm.
The Unpopular Girl
As she does this, my breathing slows down a bit.
I nuzzle my face against Miss Sue's shoulder, clinging tighter.
The Unpopular Girl
Miss Sue whispers, "And remember, Bingo will be waiting for you when you get home."
I pull back and smile, "Bingo always makes me feel better."
Miss Sue nods, "Just like you make us feel better every day."
The Unpopular Girl
I watch as my small hands reach up to return Miss Sue's hug.
The Unpopular Girl
My fingers clutch the fabric of her black jacket.
The hallway stays quiet except for the sound of my breaths steadying.
My jean jacket makes a soft rustling noise as I shift closer, pressing my face into Miss Sue's shoulder again.
The Unpopular Girl
Miss Sue keeps rubbing gentle circles on my back.
The Unpopular Girl
My long brown hair falls forward, hiding part of my face, but I can see my expression becoming more peaceful.
I take a deep breath, release her, and step forward to open the door.
The Unpopular Girl
I watch as my hand trembles on the classroom doorknob without turning it.
My shoulders start to shake and my chin quivers as tears well up in my eyes.
The Unpopular Girl
When the first sob escapes, Miss Sue immediately steps forward and lifts me into her arms.
The Unpopular Girl
My pink skirt crumples against Miss Sue's black jacket as I wrap my small legs around her waist.
Miss Sue cradles my head against her shoulder, gently running her fingers through my long brown hair while whispering "It's okay, sweetheart."

I sniffle, "But what if they laugh at me again?"
Miss Sue's voice is firm yet soothing, "Then we'll remind them that everyone deserves kindness, just like you do."
I nod against her shoulder, whispering, "I'll try to be brave like you said."
I watch as Miss Sue lifts me into her arms, cradling my head against her chest.

My pink skirt crinkles as I wrap my small legs around Miss Sue's waist, clinging tightly to her black jacket.
Tears continue streaming down my face, dampening Miss Sue's shoulder.
"Don't worry, sweetie. I've got you," Miss Sue whispers, gently swaying back and forth in the empty hallway.
"You're safe in my arms now, just like a little angel."
The Unpopular Girl
My sobs gradually quiet as I nestle closer, my long brown hair falling forward as I rest my head on Miss Sue's shoulder.
Miss Sue gently tilts my chin up, "Do you remember what we talked about last week?"
The Unpopular Girl
I nod slowly, wiping my eyes with the back of my hand, "You said that being different is what makes me special."
Miss Sue smiles softly, "Exactly, and that's something no one can ever take away from you."
