Sprout
first_person_protagonist, male. He is a man who was abused as a child by his father, Seedly. He is regretful, determined, and protective. Sprout grew up hating his father but longing for a paternal love that was absent. As an adult, he had a chance to create a different family dynamic with Cosmo and his children. Despite leaving her twice, he eventually returned to embrace his role as a father and partner, vowing to be the supportive parent he never had.
Cosmo
side_character, female. She is Sprout's partner and the mother of their children. She is patient, loving, and resilient. Cosmo welcomed Sprout back into her life with forgiveness and hope. Despite his initial shortcomings as a father, she stood by him and helped him grow into the parent he should have been. Her willingness to give Sprout chances showcases her capacity for forgiveness and her commitment to their family unit.
Seedly
side_character, male. He is Sprout’s abusive father from when Sprout was a child. He is harsh, unloving, and resentful. Seedly regularly abused Sprout, fostering a deeply ingrained hatred in him. His violent behavior left emotional scars in Sprout, but his legacy also motivated Sprout to change and become a better parent. Seedly’s actions are largely absent from the narrative once Sprout has distanced himself from the negative influence.
My name is Sprout.
When I was a kid, my dad, Seedly, abused me and taught me to hate.
I grew up hating my dad and wishing he were dead.
When I had the chance to kill him, I didn't.
And when I had the chance to be a hero, I failed.
I didn't think things could get worse.
But then I met Cosmo and fell in love.
I left her pregnant—and ran.
I came back for her and left again when she had our first baby.
I did it again with our second baby.
But this time, I was wrong.
She wasn't alone.
And when an unknown force told me to come back and stay with her, I did.
Because I knew I'd made a mistake.
I wanted to be a better man, a better partner, and a better father than Seedly had been to me.
So I came back for Cosmo and our babies.
I sit at the kitchen table while Cosmo feeds our youngest.
My hands shake as I watch her gentle movements, so different from Seedly's rough grip.
A memory flashes through my mind.
I was little, maybe five or six.
I spilled milk on the table.
Seedly threw a plate at my head.
I ducked, but not fast enough.
The edge of the plate cut my forehead.
Blood dripped into my eyes as Seedly shouted at me for being careless.
I flinch at the memory, and when I look up, I see our toddler has dropped his sippy cup on the floor.
Without thinking, I snap at him to pick it up, to be more careful next time.
He looks up at me with wide eyes, fear in his gaze.
And in that moment, I see myself as a child, cowering under Seedly's rage. I freeze, horrified by my own actions.
Cosmo touches my arm, her eyes filled with understanding and concern.
"I'll clean it up," she says softly.
I stumble to the bathroom, gripping the sink tightly to keep myself steady.
I stare at my reflection in the mirror, and for a moment, I see Seedly's angry face staring back at me.
"No," I whisper, punching the wall beside the sink.
Cosmo's voice calls softly from the doorway, "Sprout, you don't have to be him."
I turn to face her, my voice trembling, "But what if I already am?"
She steps closer, determination in her eyes, "Then let's change that together."
While Cosmo is out with the kids, I decide to tackle the hall closet.
It's been a mess for months, and I figure it's a good way to keep myself busy.
I pull everything out and start sorting things into piles.
As I reach into the back of the closet, my hand brushes against something hard.
I pull it out and see that it's an old shoebox.
It's covered in dust and looks like it hasn't been opened in years.
I set it aside and continue cleaning.
When I'm done, I pick up the box and examine it more closely.
It's old and worn, but there's no label on it.
I open the lid and find a stack of old papers inside.
I start to flip through them, but they're just old receipts and junk mail.
I'm about to close the box when I notice something else at the bottom.
It's an envelope, addressed to me in Seedly's jagged handwriting. My hands shake as I pull it out of the box.
I turn it over in my hands, wondering what could be inside.
I look at the date stamp on the envelope and see that it was sent on my tenth birthday.
The day Seedly broke my arm.
I feel a lump form in my throat as I stare at the envelope.
What could Seedly have written to me on that day?
I take a deep breath and open the envelope.
Inside, there's a letter written on a piece of yellowed paper.
My hands shake as I unfold it and begin to read.
"Dear Sprout,
Your mother didn't die in childbirth.
She left us both."
A photo falls out of the letter as I read those words, and I catch it before it hits the floor.
I stare at the photo, my voice barely a whisper, "Cosmo, she didn't die... she left."
Cosmo steps into the room, her eyes wide with shock, "What do you mean? Your whole life you thought—"
I nod, handing her the letter, "Seedly lied to me... about everything."
