I lay in bed with my head resting on my husband Thatch's shoulder.
My other husband Jay was curled up beside me, and my best friends Ace, Izo were snuggled up on the other side.
It was our first night sleeping together in our new room, and even though there were five of us in the bed, it was not crowded.
We each took up little space, and we were all comfortable.
Jay was actually sleeping with his head on Ace's shoulder, and Ace had a hand resting on Jay's hip.
I knew that Ace would have never have been comfortable with this kind of intimacy before he met us, but he had grown so much over the past few months.
He still looked a bit stern sometimes, but he was actually very gentle and kind.
I knew that he would always take care of us and keep us safe.
I thought about how lucky we were to have him as a part of our crew and how lucky we were to have found each other.
We were an unlikely family, but we were a strong one.
I notice Jay shift against Ace's shoulder.
His face scrunches up, and he mutters something unintelligible.
The movement draws my attention from my comfortable spot on Thatch.
Jay's fingers twitch against the blanket, and his mumbling grows a little bit louder, though I still can't make out what he is saying.
Ace's hand on Jay's hip tightens protectively, but he doesn't wake up.
I carefully reach across to brush some hair back from Jay's forehead to see if he is having a bad dream.
The gentle touch seems to calm him down, and his mumbling grows quieter again.
His expression smooths out, and he snuggles in closer to Ace's warmth.
The gentle rise and fall of his chest catches my attention, but his fingers continue their subtle dance against the blanket.
Keeping my voice low so I don't wake the others, I shift a little bit in Thatch's embrace to get a better look at Jay's face.
His features are still relaxed, but I can see small movements under his eyelids as if he is still dreaming.
I lean closer to Thatch's ear, feeling his warm breath against my cheek as he stirs slightly.
"Jay's dreaming again," I murmur.
Understanding crosses his face, and without a word, he extends his arm a little bit wider, creating a protective circle around our sleeping family.
And in that quiet moment, surrounded by the gentle rhythm of their breathing, I knew we were home.
