I am six years older than her.
When I was a child, she was my neighbor.
Later, she became my teacher.
We lost contact after primary school, and it was only when I came back to the country for high school that I became her student.
She didn't recognize me.
I knew she wouldn't, because back then, I was only a kid who followed her everywhere, looking up at her with admiration.
I knew she wouldn't recognize me because I had come too close to her.
Before that, I had been sent abroad for my high school education.
During the summer vacation before my senior year of high school, I had returned to Shao Hai City one month in advance because of an accident.
My ankle was fractured, and the doctor told me to observe for a period of time to see if the nerves would recover on their own.
The sole of my foot had several blisters from friction, and it hurt so much that it made it difficult for me to walk.
I keep my head down as I walk through the crowded hallway after class, taking smaller steps to reduce the pressure on my ankle.
The injury is still throbbing, and the blisters on the sole of my foot send sharp pains up my leg with each step.
The sound of high heels clicking against the floor comes from behind me.
It's a familiar sound that I've heard many times before, a sound that I can recognize even with my eyes closed.
Zhong Yuan's footsteps are light and elegant, and she has a habit of walking fast.
But this time, her footsteps slow down near me.
I press closer to the wall, pretending to check my phone as students rush past me.
I grip my phone tightly, not daring to look up until she passes me by.
I lean against the cold wall, my injured ankle throbbing as I scroll mindlessly through my phone.
Her footsteps grow louder, each click of her heels echoing in the empty hallway.
My fingers tighten around the phone as she slows down beside me.
The familiar scent of her perfume - the same one she wore years ago - wafts past.
She pauses for a moment, and I sense her gaze on me.
"Are you feeling unwell?"
Her voice is gentle, just like it was all those years ago.
I shake my head without looking up, mumbling "I'm fine" as my chest tightens.
She hesitates briefly, then continues down the hallway, leaving me with the weight of unspoken memories.
