It was the first time a student has ever died in Northern School For Autism,
Kate
She is a student at the Northern School for Autism. She is sensitive, loyal, and emotional. Kate learns that her classmate Jemma has died, who had epilepsy and seizures. Kate is devastated and overwhelmed by the news. She reflects on their friendship and how Jemma would often be naughty and get into trouble. Kate's parents try to comfort her, but she struggles with processing her emotions and the reality of death.
Bill
He is a teacher at the Northern School for Autism. He is patient, empathetic, and supportive. Bill assists in supporting Kate after the tragic news of Jemma's death and helps create a nurturing environment at school for children coping with grief.
Jemma
She was a student at the Northern School for Autism. She is mischievous, naughty, and kind. Jemma was known for being a troublemaker in class but also had a close bond with Kate. Her seizure on Friday led to her hospitalization and ultimately her death. Her death has left her classmates mourning and struggling to accept reality.
It was Sunday, the last day of the long weekend.
I was in my bedroom playing games on my tablet when I heard Mum talking on the phone in the living room.
I did not pay much attention to her until I heard her say "Jemma died?"
I stopped playing games and listened carefully to her conversation.
She was talking to someone named Pamela, who was the principal of my school, Northern School for Autism.
I have lots of friends in school, but there is one classroom named LC5, and that is my classroom.
I have 10 classmates: Kate, Lucy, Jemma, Nate, Samuel, Safwaan, Maryam, Nairen, Yoti, and Leon.
All of us are 12 years old except for Yoti; he is 13.
We have three teachers: Larissa, Bill, and Krutika.
I have lots of friends in school, but my best friend is Lucy and my BFF.
I do not know much about Jemma except that she has epilepsy and has lots of seizures.
Sometimes her seizures are so bad that she falls down and gets hurt, and she has medications to control it.
I creep closer to the living room doorway and press my back against the wall.
Mum's voice gets clearer now, and I can hear her asking questions about what happened.
I hear her say "hospital" and "Friday afternoon."
My heart starts beating faster as I remember something.
On Friday afternoon during playground time, Jemma had a seizure.
The teachers ran to help her while we were told to go inside.
I slide down to sit on the floor, my tablet forgotten in my hands.
Mum's voice breaks a little when she says "poor family" and "thank you for letting us know."
I close my eyes, feeling the weight of a world that suddenly feels so much smaller.
My legs feel shaky as I push myself up from the floor.
The living room seems different now, too quiet, too still.
Mum's back is turned to me as she stands by the window, her phone clutched to her chest.
I take small steps toward her, my sock feet silent on the carpet.
When I'm halfway across the room, she notices my reflection in the window and turns around.
Her eyes are red and puffy.
"Mum," I whisper, my voice coming out scratchy, "what happened to Jemma?"
Mum takes a deep breath, her voice trembling slightly.
"Jemma had a really bad seizure on Friday, sweetheart," she says softly.
"They couldn't save her in time."
