*stands up straight with one hand on hip*
Paulina Holland: Okay...
Holland: Are you sure you want to do this?
Paulina Holland: Yeah...
*looks at me*
Holland: You know I’ll always be here for you, no matter what.
Paulina Holland: I know.
Holland: Then let’s get started.
Paulina Holland: Okay.
*walks over to door, turns back to Holland*
Paulina Holland: I’m really nervous.
Holland: I know. Me too.
Paulina Holland: What if they don’t believe us?
Holland: We’ll be okay.
*smiles softly*
Paulina Holland: You always know what to say.
Holland: That’s what sisters are for.
*smirks*
Paulina Holland: I wish...
*walks out of room*
Holland: Paulina...
*looks at family photos in living room*
I wish things were different between us.
I wish I could have been there for her like she is for me.
I’m not sure what the future holds, but I am ready for whatever comes our way.
I am ready to face it head-on and overcome it all.
For my sister, for my best friend, and for myself.
We will get through this together.
We are strong enough and resilient enough to face anything that comes our way.
The Unexpected Switch
I follow her at a safe distance, keeping my head down and my hands in my pockets.
She walks down the empty suburban street, her shoulders hunched and her arms wrapped around herself.
She mutters under her breath, occasionally shaking her head or gesturing with her hands.
The evening sun casts long shadows across the pavement, stretching out in front of us like skeletal fingers.
She stops at the corner, looking lost.
Through the gaps between houses, I catch snippets of words.
"Family...truth...can’t...won’t..."
She pauses by a wooden fence, pulling out her phone before quickly putting it away without using it.
Paulina: "Holland, what did you mean back there about the truth?"
Holland: "I found out something about Dad... something he never told us."
The Unexpected Switch
Paulina: "What do you mean? What could he possibly be hiding?"
Holland: "I don't know, but I think it's big. He was acting strange before he left, and I overheard him talking to someone on the phone."
Paulina: "Who was it?"
Holland: "I don't know, but it sounded important. And then he said something about protecting us."
Paulina: "Protecting us from what?"
Holland: "That's what I want to know. I think he might be in trouble, and I need to find out what's going on."
Paulina: "But why didn't he tell us? Why keep it a secret?"
Holland: "I don't know, but I'm going to find out."
She turns the corner and continues walking.
She stops at the end of the street, looking back over her shoulder.
Her eyes scan the empty sidewalk, but she doesn’t see me.
The Unexpected Switch
She shrugs and continues walking.
I follow her, keeping a safe distance.
We walk for several blocks before she stops again.
She looks around nervously before pulling out her phone and dialing a number.
She waits for a moment before speaking.
"Hello? Is this... oh, hi. Yeah, it’s me. Look, I need to talk to you about something. Can we meet up?"
She pauses for a moment before continuing.
"Okay, great. See you soon."
She hangs up the phone and looks around again.
This time, she notices me standing across the street.
She narrows her eyes at me before turning away. The streetlight casts long shadows across the pavement as we walk down the deserted road.
The only sound is the soft crunch of gravel beneath our feet and the distant hum of crickets in the nearby woods.
The air is heavy with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, mingling with the sweet hint of blooming flowers in the distance.
It’s a chilly autumn evening, with a hint of frost in the air.
The sky above is darkening rapidly, with stars beginning to twinkle like diamonds against the deep blue canvas.
The moon casts an ethereal glow over everything, illuminating our path as we make our way through the quiet suburban neighborhood.
We pass by rows of neatly manicured lawns and tidy houses, their windows glowing warmly with soft light from within.
Paulina: "Holland, who were you talking to just now?"
Holland: "It's someone who might know more about Dad's situation, but I need to be sure before I say anything."
Paulina: "You think they can help us figure out what he's hiding?"
The Unexpected Switch
Holland: "I'm not sure, but it's worth a shot. Let's go to that coffee shop downtown. I'll meet them there and see what they have to say."
I trail her to a small, dimly lit coffee shop downtown.
She goes inside while I wait outside, watching through the window.
She sits at a corner table, fidgeting with her phone.
Twenty minutes pass, and no one shows up.
I go inside and slide into the booth across from her.
She jumps, startled.
Her mascara is slightly smeared, and her hands shake as she grips her untouched latte.
When I reach for her trembling fingers, she yanks them away.
"Sis, can I talk to you right now?"

The Unexpected Switch
Her voice cracks.
"I need to tell you about Dad."
I nod, bracing myself for the truth that could change everything.
