I was 21 years old when I got into my first relationship.
It wasn't like I didn't want to be in one before that, but I was an introvert, and not once had I mustered up the courage to talk to my crush.
I tried to, but it never worked out.
Either my crush had a boyfriend, or I was too chicken to make a move on my part.
I thought things would change when I got to college, but they didn't.
I still wasn't able to talk to girls I didn't know.
And since most people at my college already knew each other, that left me meeting very few girls with whom I could potentially have a relationship.
It seemed as though I was doomed to be single for the rest of my life.
Then, the impossible happened.
I met her.
Her name was Emily Carter, and she was everything I was not.
Outgoing, loud, confident, and spontaneous.
I had met her through mutual friends, and we instantly became friends.
Well, more like, she had insisted that we become friends.
At first, I was hesitant because I didn't really know her, but she had seemed so nice and interesting that I couldn't turn down her offer.
The Unexpected Love Story
One day after class, she had asked me if I wanted to grab a cup of coffee with her at the campus café.
I had agreed, and we walked across the campus together, my hands shaking in my pockets.
I was nervous about what we would talk about.
I didn't want to be awkward around her.
When we got to the café, I followed her through the crowd of students and professors to the counter.
She had ordered a caramel latte while I had stuck to plain black coffee.
After paying, we had made our way to an empty table by the window and sat down.
I was still worried about how our conversation would go, but when she had pulled out a book from her bag and placed it on the table, I noticed that it was "The Catcher in the Rye," one of my favorite books.
I had pulled out my own copy of the book from my backpack, which was worn from years of reading it.
She had smiled when she saw it, and her eyes lit up with excitement. "Oh my God," she said, "you've read this? It's one of my favorite books."
The Unexpected Love Story
"Mine too," I replied, opening my book to one of my favorite parts.
"Have you read anything else by Salinger?"
"Only 'Franny and Zooey.' Have you read that?"
"I have. I loved it."
We talked for over two hours about our favorite books and authors before noticing that the sun was setting behind us.
The Unexpected Love Story
Our empty cups were sitting on the table in front of us, forgotten in our enthusiasm for our conversation.
After leaving the café, we walked to the parking lot where she had left her car.
I had been amazed by how much we had in common.
We were both English majors, and we shared the same love for literature.
She was so easy to talk to that I had forgotten how nervous I had been earlier in the day.
We talked about everything from books to movies to music to our families.
I learned that she was a year older than me and that she was from New York.
She had moved out to California after high school because she wanted to be an editor at a publishing company.
I had told her about my own dreams of becoming a writer and that I was working on my first novel.
By the time we said goodbye and got into our cars, I was already half in love with her.
The next day, she had asked me if I wanted to go out for coffee again, this time with her friend Rachel, who was also an English major.
The Unexpected Love Story
I had agreed, and we met up at the café again. Rachel was a quiet girl with glasses and curly brown hair.
She had seemed nice enough, but I could tell that Emily liked me more than she did.
After a few minutes of conversation, Emily and I started talking about our favorite books again while Rachel sat quietly listening to us.
When we started discussing Holden Caulfield's character in "The Catcher in the Rye," Rachel excused herself and left the table to make a phone call.
As Emily and I continued dissecting Holden's character, a woman sitting at the table next to ours kept glancing over at us while typing away on her laptop.
I wondered if she was annoyed by how loud we were being, but then I noticed that she was smiling as she typed away on her laptop.
After a few more minutes of glancing at us, she finally shut her laptop and stood up from her chair.
Emily and I stopped talking when she approached our table.
"Hi," she said with a smile, extending her hand for us to shake.
"I'm Sarah Chen."
Emily shook her hand first, then me. "Nice to meet you," Emily said, smiling back at her.
"I'm Emily Carter, and this is Benjamin Hart."
"Nice to meet you too," Sarah repeated back to us before taking her seat again at the table next to ours.
"I couldn't help overhearing your conversation about Holden Caulfield. You guys seem really knowledgeable about him."
"We're both English majors," Emily explained.
