I love to explore.
When I’m not in school, I don’t watch T.V. or play video games like the rest of my classmates.
Instead, I go out and explore.
My brother Taro and I will hike, climb trees, or go into the nearby caves and such around Tokyo.
We have done it since we were little, and we never get bored.
There is always something new to see or find.
Today, I decided to go into a cave I had never been in before.
I tied my traveling pack securely to my back with my tent and sleeping bag, along with my hunting pack that housed my collapsible crossbow, quiver of bolts, machete on my hip, and first aid kit.
I grabbed my flashlight and put extra batteries in my pocket before heading into the cave.
As I walked through the entrance, I shone my light around the mouth looking for any markers or signs that might say ‘do not proceed past this point’ or ‘danger’, but there was none.
I shrugged and continued forward, stepping over large rocks and small streams.
The farther I went, the darker it got until finally, I couldn’t see any daylight behind me anymore.
I stopped for a moment wondering if I should turn back now or set up camp right where I was.
Nah, I thought, let’s see how much further this cave goes.
The Unexpected Knight
I secured my headlamp and tested the rock face with my boot before taking each step down.
The limestone felt solid, but slick under my feet.
Water dripped somewhere in the passage and echoed around me.
My light beam caught glimpses of mineral deposits sparkling on the walls.
The air grew cooler as I descended, and I pulled my jacket closer around me.
The Unexpected Knight
About twenty feet down, the passage narrowed, forcing me to turn sideways to squeeze through.
My pack scraped against the rock wall.
The crossbow and machete clanked together as I inched forward.
Just ahead, the passage seemed to widen again.
The passage opened up slightly, letting me catch my breath.
My headlamp shone on the damp walls, revealing strange markings.
They weren’t modern graffiti, though.
These were deliberate lines carved deep into the stone.
I reached out a hand to touch them.
My fingers traced the grooves, feeling the sharp edges where the carvings met the smooth rock.
These weren’t random scratches.
The carvings formed intricate patterns, geometric shapes, and what looked like writing in an unfamiliar script.
I pulled my phone from my pocket to take a picture, but the screen read no signal.
I frowned and continued to examine the symbols.
The Unexpected Knight
The air felt different here, heavier somehow.
A low hum resonated through the cavern, vibrating in my bones.
I pull out my smartphone, switching to camera mode.
Keeping my headlamp trained on the markings, I frame each section carefully, making sure to get clear shots despite the dim light.
My fingers are trembling slightly as I work, still unsettled by that strange humming vibration.
The walls seem different now, almost warm to the touch as I steady myself against them.
I take systematic photos, moving from left to right across the carved patterns.
The Unexpected Knight
When I check the captured images on my phone screen, they appear distorted and blurry, with strange dark patches obscuring the symbols.
I try again, adjusting the camera settings and taking a few more shots.
I switch my phone to manual mode, adjusting the ISO and shutter speed.
The humming grows louder, making it harder to hold the phone steady.
I brace myself against the damp cave wall, trying to keep my hand from shaking.
I focus on a particularly intricate symbol - something like a spiral with branching lines.
The air feels warmer than before, and sweat drips down my neck.
The Unexpected Knight
My fingers fumble with the screen as I tap to focus on the symbol.
When I press the shutter button, a bright flash erupts from my phone, far brighter than usual.
The light reflects off the carvings, creating dancing patterns across the walls.
My phone screen goes black, and the humming reaches a fever pitch.
I press the power button repeatedly, but the screen stays black.
The phone feels oddly warm in my hand, like it’s been left in direct sunlight.
I clip it back onto my belt and turn my attention back to the carvings.
My headlamp shines brighter now, illuminating the patterns more clearly.
There are concentric circles and angular symbols that look like some ancient writing system I’ve studied in history class.
The Unexpected Knight
I trace one particularly deep groove with my fingertip, noticing how the edges feel sharper than natural erosion would create.
"Do you see it too?" a voice echoes softly from the shadows behind me.
I spin around, heart pounding, to find an old man standing there, his eyes reflecting the light of my headlamp.
"These markings," he continues, stepping closer, "they tell a story that has been waiting centuries for someone like you to read."
The elderly man reaches toward the wall, his weathered fingers hovering just above the circular patterns.
He mutters words in a language I don’t understand, and almost immediately, the carvings begin to pulse with a faint blue light.
I take a step back, my boots scraping against loose rocks on the cave floor.
The glow intensifies, concentrating in the center of the spiral design.
The rock surface seems to ripple, like water disturbed by an unseen force.
Then, from the heart of the pulsing light, a small scaled head pushes through the solid stone.
My hand instinctively moves to the machete sheathed at my side as more of the creature emerges.
It’s no larger than a domesticated cat, its body covered in shimmering scales that reflect every color of the rainbow.
Wings unfurl from its back, delicate and iridescent.
Eyes gleam with an intelligence that makes my breath catch in my throat.
The Unexpected Knight
The creature shakes off bits of crystal dust and chirps - a sound that’s both familiar and alien.
