I have a six-year-old daughter named Lily.
Lily is adopted.
Her real parents died when she was three months old.
They had no other family to take care of her, so I was ready to raise her.
But hey, I was so sure that they would have looked like each other.
Lily doesn’t look like me at all.
She looks like her real biological parents.
I must assume I’m her real mom then.
That was true about adopting.
My family knows Lily is adopted; I can understand at her age.
My brother has a fiancée.
They’ve been together for a few weeks.
We’re going to explore at my parents' house.
She saw an old photo of me.
With Lilly‘s real parents.
So I did realize when she was adopted, for a bonus she didn’t know.
She asks my mom, "What’s this picture?"
"This is your mom and her parents," my mom explained to her.
Then she asked, "Are they dead?"
"Yes," I told her.
"Why?""Because they couldn’t take care of you anymore," I explained to her.
"So my mom couldn’t take care of me?"
"Yes," I nodded.
"Why?""Because they died," I said again.
"Ohh.. Then why are you my mom if they’re dead?"
"Because someone had to take care of you, and it was me," I told her.
"But why?"
"Because you’re my daughter," I told her.
"But why?"
I sighed.
"Mason, can you explain it to her?"
He looked at me and then at her.
"Emily, Lily is adopted," he explained to her.
"What does that mean?" she asked him.
"It means that she was adopted by your mom," he explained to her.
"What does that mean?"
I sighed again.
"Emily, I’m sorry but I don’t think I can explain it to you right now," I told her.
"Why?" she asked me again.
I looked at Mason and he looked back at me.
"Emily, why don’t you go play with Lily for a while?" he suggested to her.
She nodded and got up from the couch in the living room where we were sitting and went over to Lily who was playing with her dolls on the carpet.
Mason turned his attention back to me.
"You shouldn’t have laughed at Emily," he said angrily. "I didn’t mean to," I replied softly.
"I know but still," he said, his voice tense with frustration.
"I know, Mason. It was just... unexpected," I explained softly.
He shook his head, still upset with me.
"We need to handle this carefully," he said firmly.
