I had never been in a relationship, not because I hadn't found anyone who interested me, but because I had never been given a chance to.
No one had dared to ask me out.
Not that I was waiting for anyone to ask me out, but I had to admit that I was curious about love.
What was it like to be loved and to love someone with all your heart?
I stared into the mirror in front of me.
My sister was doing my hair and makeup.
I was hesitant at first, but I allowed her to, since she seemed so excited to do it for me.
I was going to a ball after all.
It was tonight that I would be meeting the most beautiful and charming woman I had ever laid eyes on.
She was captivating, mesmerizing, and enchanting.
Her beauty had left me breathless.
I felt as though I had been punched in the gut.
I couldn't take my eyes off her even though she wasn't giving me any attention.
She didn't even notice my existence.
She was talking to her boyfriend, laughing beautifully, looking carefree and happy.
I wanted to meet her after the ball was over, but I didn't know how I would go about doing that.
I didn't know her name and apart from her looking beautiful, I didn't know anything about her.
The Unexpected Encounter
I took a deep breath and made my way through the ballroom.
I had been staring at her for long enough.
It was time for me to finally meet her.
The ballroom was crowded, but I pushed through the crowd until I reached the refreshment table.
She was standing by herself, sipping on a glass of red wine.
Her boyfriend wasn't around, but he would be back soon.
I could see him talking to a group of men, laughing and smiling at them.
I took another deep breath and walked over to her.
My heels clicked against the marble floor.
My heart was pounding in my chest, but I kept my composure.
The Unexpected Encounter
Alexandra had taught me how to do that, and she had told me that it would help me in situations like this one.
As I drew closer to her, she turned around and our eyes met.
She had been staring into her wineglass before she turned around.
She looked intrigued as she smiled at me, revealing red lips that matched her red dress perfectly. "Hello," I said, extending my hand out to her.
"Good evening," she replied, taking my hand in hers and giving it a gentle squeeze before releasing it back into mine.
The Unexpected Encounter
"My name is Evelyn Hart."
"I'm Sophia Bennett."
She held her champagne glass in her elegant fingers.
Her perfume was intoxicating.
It smelled like jasmine on a summer evening.
I had always loved that smell.
We stood in silence for a few moments, and then she broke the silence.
"Do you like the music?"
"The orchestra is very talented."
I replied.
"It's a shame that there are so many people here. It's hard to hear them properly."
The Unexpected Encounter
She nodded in agreement.
"I know what you mean. The crowd is quite large."
She glanced around the room, her eyes lingering on the chandeliers before they landed back on mine.
I smiled at her and she smiled back.
Her eyes kept finding mine, and each time she looked away, it was for a shorter amount of time than before.
The Unexpected Encounter
She wasn't glancing over at her boyfriend anymore, but I knew that he would be back soon to claim her as his own.
The orchestra started another waltz, and the melody floated through the ballroom.
I took a deep breath and gathered my courage.
I looked at her face, searching for any sign of hesitation.
My palm was sweaty, but I extended my hand out to her anyway.
The chandeliers cast a warm glow over her features.
She stared at my hand for a moment before she glanced over at the entrance of the ballroom.
Her boyfriend had gone outside for some fresh air.
He had been gone for a while now, but I knew that he would be back soon.
The ballroom was filled with couples dancing to the waltz.
The women's dresses flowed around their legs as they twirled across the dance floor.
The men's suits were dark and elegant as they held their partners close to them.
The Unexpected Encounter
The chandeliers cast shadows around the room, and they moved across the walls as the dancers moved across the dance floor.
Sophia's eyes went back to my outstretched hand, and her lips tilted up into a slight smile.
"Would you like to dance?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
She hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "I would love to."
As we stepped onto the dance floor, she leaned in closer and whispered, "I've been waiting for someone to ask me all night."
The Unexpected Encounter
I led her onto the dance floor, and my hand trembled slightly as it settled on her waist.
Her emerald silk dress was cool against my fingertips.
She placed her hand on my shoulder, and our free hands clasped together.
The waltz was a three-count dance, and I took a deep breath and began to move to the rhythm of the music.
At first, our movements were a bit tentative.
We had never danced with each other before, so we were still getting used to each other's steps.
The other couples swirled around us, but I only had eyes for her.
Her dark hair framed her face perfectly.
Her perfume grew stronger whenever we turned in a certain way.
As we moved across the dance floor, our steps became more fluid.
The Unexpected Encounter
She followed my lead perfectly, pressing slightly closer to me with every turn.
Her voice was soft as she leaned in, "You dance beautifully, Evelyn."
I smiled, trying to keep my voice steady. "Thank you, Sophia. I've been wanting to dance with you for a long time."
She looked up at me with a curious expression. "Why tonight?"
