My girlfriend, Alex, has a sporty kind of beauty.
Her short black hair is tousled by my fingers as I sit next to her on the sofa in our cozy apartment.
Her favorite jacket is black with white stripes.
The way she tilts her head, the sparkle in her brown eyes, the flush rising to her cheeks—she’s damn sexy and also damn sweet.
"What’s the plan for tonight, baby?"
I ask her, stroking her hair back from her forehead.
She bites her lip, smiling up at me.
"That’s a surprise, darlin’."
She likes to use that endearment sometimes.
I like it just fine.
I pull her a little closer.
"Are you gonna tease me like this all night?"
"Depends," she says, eyes sparkling.
"Can I?"
"Alex…"
I pretend to be annoyed, but really I love it when she gets playful like this.
She knows I do, which is why she does it.
I love that, too—how much she pays attention to me, and how much I can count on her to be spontaneous and fun.
"Okay, okay," she laughs.
"I’ll give you a clue…"
She leans toward me, lowering her voice.
"It’s something we’ve been wanting to do…"
Mmm, now she’s teasing me with her closeness, her voice, her hint.
My body responds right away, but I don’t want to go too fast—I want to savor this moment with her.
I want to make every second count.
The Unexpected Date
I lean back into the sofa cushions, keeping my arm around her shoulders.
She snuggles in closer to me, her body warm against my side.
Outside our apartment window, the city lights twinkle and shine.
I trace lazy circles on her shoulder through her jacket.
She reaches up to catch my hand, intertwining our fingers.
The Unexpected Date
I squeeze her hand gently before nudging her shoulder with mine.
"You know I love surprises, right?"
"Good," she says, smiling up at me.
The dim light in our living room makes her face glow.
She’s so pretty, and I love her so much.
She shifts closer to me on the sofa, her fingers tracing patterns on my arm as she keeps that mischievous smile on her face.
The city lights cast shadows across her striped jacket.
She looks down at her phone, then glances toward the door of our apartment.
She does this a few times, checking the time on her phone, then looking toward the door.
I pretend to be absorbed in my own phone, but I’m watching her out of the corner of my eye.
She’s getting more and more excited about something—she keeps looking toward the door, then back at me with growing anticipation.
I can see the effort it takes for her to keep from blurting out her surprise.
The Unexpected Date
She glances at her phone for the twentieth time in five minutes, her leg bouncing faster.
Her fingers drum against the fabric of her jacket.
She shifts a little on the sofa, her body angled toward the door.
I reach for the TV remote, and she grabs my hand, squeezing it tight.
"Just wait," she whispers, eyes fixed on the door.
The city lights outside cast moving shadows across her face.
She starts telling me about her day at work, speaking quickly and stumbling over words.
I’m trying to listen, but then she freezes in mid-sentence, her head tilted to the side.
Footsteps echo down the hallway outside our apartment—our neighbors coming home from a night out?
The footsteps get louder as they come closer…closer…closer.
