My name is Rahnuma Panthaky and I am a survivor.
I was born in New York City to Indian parents who still become nostalgic when someone mentions Ballygunje or the fact that they still have a home in South Calcutta even though they have been in the United States for the last seventeen years of their lives.
They came here looking for a dream, something that would give them a sense of fulfillment and security that living in a city like Calcutta couldn’t.
But life had other plans for them.
My father Raj worked tirelessly to make ends meet and even gave up his dreams of becoming a musician.
My mother Sunita never gave up her habit of hoarding food, not even after they became solvent enough to afford food for their daughter and themselves without having to worry about where the next meal was going to come from.
And me?
Well I still live with my parents, but that’s not because I want to.
But more about that later.
I have just turned twenty one and I am ready to take on the world.
Even though my parents still treat me as if I were sixteen, I am willing to wait it out.
For the time being at least, till I figure out what I want to do with my life.
I know what I don’t want – a boring job that pays the bills and a husband and kids to take care of, all by the time I am twenty five.
