Elijah a 14 year old dark brown country boy from southwestern PA and his crush Riley G.S survive a zombie apocalypse with best friend lazy eyed 15 year old Matthew
Elijah
He is a 14yearold high school student from southwestern Pennsylvania. He is brave, resourceful, and determined. After the zombie apocalypse, Elijah's world changed. He lost his family, including his younger brother Noah. He survived with his best friend Matthew and his crush, Riley G.S. The group struggled to find safety and food. They eventually formed an alliance with other survivors, including a mysterious woman named Dr. Zara and her team, leading to a new life under a protective roof.
Dr. Zara
She is a 30yearold doctor from New York City. She is intelligent, assertive, and compassionate. After losing her family in the apocalypse, she struggled to survive but eventually found shelter with her team in Pittsburgh. As the de facto leader among survivors, she brought medical expertise and confidence to her group. Her presence marked a turning point for Elijah's group as they sought alliances for mutual protection.
Matthew
He is a 15yearold high school student from southwestern Pennsylvania. He is lazyeyed, friendly, and dependable. Matthew was Elijah's best friend since kindergarten and shared an unspoken bond with Riley. He suffered from headaches and was often tired, which he attributed to allergies. Despite his laidback nature, he played a crucial role in the group's survival, providing comedic relief and moral support when needed. His presence was a stabilizing factor for Elijah and Riley during the apocalypse.
Elijah
I was only 14 years old when the world changed.
It happened on a Tuesday.
I know because I had to do a math problem for homework that involved the date, and it was October 19th.
I was in the eighth grade.
I don’t remember much about the actual day the world changed, because I was at school.
But I do remember what happened when I got home from school that day.
My best friend, Matthew, was at my house with Riley G.S., the girl I wanted to be my girlfriend but was too afraid to ask.
They were both in my grade at school and we all rode the same bus home.
We were all standing in the front yard when we saw our first zombie.
It was a woman in a business suit with her blonde hair loose and disheveled.
She stumbled out of the ditch by the road and started walking toward us slowly.
At first, we thought it was just some lady who was drunk, or crazy, or both.
But then she fell to her knees and started screaming, and that’s when we realized something was wrong.
She got back up and kept coming toward us, but now she looked different.
Her skin was grayish in color, with dark veins visible underneath, and blood was pouring out of her mouth.
My hands started to shake and I backed up until I hit the porch railing.
Matthew and Riley stopped moving too, and we all stood there staring at the woman in front of us.
The gurgling sounds she was making got louder as she got closer, and her arms were outstretched like she wanted to grab us.
I patted my pockets frantically, but all I had was my wallet, a pack of gum, and a pencil.
I pulled out the pencil and gripped it tightly in my hand.
I remembered watching all those zombie movies with Matthew, and how they always said you had to shoot them in the brain to kill them.
I looked down at the pencil in my hand and wondered if it would be enough.
The woman lunged forward suddenly, her bloodshot eyes fixed on Riley.
Without thinking, I stepped between them and raised the pencil high above my head.
Then I brought it down hard, driving it into the woman’s temple as far as it would go. The pencil snapped in half and the woman fell to the ground at our feet.
We stood there staring at her for a few seconds, waiting to see if she would get back up.
But she didn’t move.
She just lay there with her eyes wide open, staring up at the sky.
Then Matthew turned to me and said, "What do we do now?"
After I killed the zombie, my hands were shaking and I dropped the bloody pencil on the ground.
Riley grabbed my arm and pulled me toward her, and Matthew stood in front of us, keeping watch for any more zombies.
We huddled together behind my mom’s old Ford Taurus, trying to figure out what we should do next.
The dead woman lay in the grass a few feet away from us, her blood soaking into the ground.
Riley’s fingers were still wrapped around my wrist, and I could feel her pulse pounding through her fingertips.
I looked over at her and saw that she was staring at me with wide eyes.
I wondered if she was in shock.
Then she turned her head toward the road and looked down toward the school we had just left.
A scream echoed through the air, coming from the direction of the school.
Riley turned back to face me and our eyes met again.
Without thinking, I leaned forward and closed the gap between us.
My lips brushed against Riley’s softly, and then I pulled back quickly before either of us could react. "What was that for?"
Riley asked me, looking confused.
Matthew cleared his throat loudly behind us, and I realized that he had been watching our whole exchange.
"Um…"
I stuttered, not sure how to answer her question.
