In my first life, I was the second daughter of a Hanlin scholar.
My husband was the only son of a fourth-grade general.
He had no siblings and was the lone child.
My family had a daughter who was older than me.
My parents had also adopted a daughter.
They had three daughters and one adopted daughter.
My family was quite rich, and my parents loved me very much.
I was their precious daughter.
My husband's family was very loving, too.
They also loved their only son very much.
They were very happy when they learned that their son would have a daughter as his wife.
The marriage brokerage between our families was done by a matchmaker, and it was quite a coincidence that it happened to be my husband and me who were matched together.
We were both very happy when we found out that we were going to be married to each other.
On the evening of our wedding day, my husband came to my room after the wedding ceremony, which was held in accordance with all the traditional customs and practices of our time.
The Unconquerable General
I sat in front of the dressing table, and through the bronze mirror, I could see my husband enter our wedding chamber.
The red silk decorations hung on the door fluttered in the evening breeze, and the candles lit up the room with dancing shadows.
My husband walked slowly towards me, his ceremonial robes rustling with each step.
His eyes met mine in the reflection of the mirror, and I could see a gentle curve of his smile.
He reached out his hand to touch the phoenix crown that was still on my head.
The Unconquerable General
Before his fingers could touch it, there was a sharp knock on the door.
A servant's urgent voice came from outside, "General, there are military orders!"
I watched as my husband's expression changed.
He turned to the door, his eyes filled with conflict and hesitation.
He walked slowly towards the door, his steps heavy with reluctance.
When he reached the door, he paused for a moment before opening it.
The servant handed him a scroll, and he took it with a steady hand.
As he unrolled the scroll, his expression became increasingly grave.
After reading the military orders, he turned back to me.
His eyes were filled with regret and apology.
"I must go," he said softly, his voice barely audible above a whisper.
I nodded silently, understanding that duty called him away from our wedding night.
The Unconquerable General
My husband walked back towards me, his steps steady and determined.
He reached out his hand to take off the phoenix crown that was still on my head.
As he placed it gently on the dressing table, I could see the conflict in his eyes.
He wanted to stay with me, but duty called him away. My hands shook slightly as I helped him take off his ceremonial robes and put on his armor.
The straps and ties were unfamiliar to me, and I struggled to secure them properly.
My husband's patient hands guided mine, helping me to fasten the armor securely around him.
As I worked, I could feel the weight of our interrupted wedding night settling upon us both.
The candlelight flickered across my husband's face as he looked at me one last time before leaving.
His eyes held a mix of love and regret, and I knew that this moment would stay with me forever.
Without another word, he turned and walked out of our wedding chamber, leaving me alone in the flickering candlelight.
I sat there for a long time, lost in thought and memories of what could have been.
The phoenix crown on the dressing table seemed to mock me, a reminder of the interrupted celebration that was meant to mark our union. As I sat there, lost in my thoughts, I heard footsteps approaching outside the door.
I turned to see my husband entering once more, his armor still secured around him.
He walked towards me with purposeful strides, stopping in front of me with a resolute expression on his face.
Without saying a word, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small object wrapped in silk.
He opened it carefully, revealing a beautiful jade pendant adorned with intricate carvings of dragons and phoenixes.
It was our wedding gift to each other, meant to be exchanged later that night when we were alone together.
"I couldn't leave without giving you this," he said, his voice filled with emotion.
I took the pendant from his hands, feeling the cool jade against my skin.
"Promise me you'll wear it always, as a reminder that my heart remains with you, no matter where I am."
