Emma
kindhearted, and vulnerable. Emma values her longterm relationship with Tom, her high school sweetheart, and the family they are about to start. Tom
loving, and oblivious. Tom grows closer to being a father figure to Emma's daughter, Steph, as they prepare for family gatherings. Unaware of the complicated bond between Emma and Will, he remains confident in his relationship with Emma. His unawareness creates tension between him and Will during their initial interactions. Despite being overshadowed by familial relationships, Tom remains central to Emma's life and stability.
I remember the first time I saw her like it was yesterday.
It was my first day at work, and even though I didn’t know it yet, my life was about to change.
I was starting my career in a prestigious company, and I was both excited and nervous.
As I walked through the doors, I couldn’t help but notice her.
She was sitting at her desk with her head buried in some papers.
I didn’t know her name then, but I would soon find out.
Our eyes met for the first time, and I felt something I had never felt before.
It was as if I had known her in another life.
The connection between us was too deep to be explained.
I knew nothing about her then—no idea that she was in a long-term relationship with a man named Tom, that she had a daughter named Steph, and that she would soon become the love of my life.
All I knew was that when our eyes met for the first time, something magical happened.
I felt like I could breathe again after being suffocated for so long.
I forced myself to look away from her and pretended to study the layout of the office.
My eyes darted from one grey cubicle to the next, then to the water cooler, and finally to the motivational posters adorning the walls.
But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t shake off the feeling that she was still watching me.
I could feel her presence in my peripheral vision, but every time I turned around, she was back to her work as if nothing had happened.
Just then, a man approached me with a smile on his face.
"Hi, you must be our new colleague," he said.
"Yes, that’s me," I replied with a nod.
"Well, let me give you a tour of the office," he said.
"Sure," I replied.
As we walked through the office, I couldn’t help but steal glances at her desk.
She was back to her work as if nothing had happened, but I noticed her shoulders tense slightly when we passed by her desk. "And this is your workstation," my tour guide said, pointing to an empty desk in the corner of the room.
I nodded mechanically and took my seat.
As it turned out, my workstation was strategically positioned where I could see her if I just turned my head slightly.
But I didn’t look in her direction.
"Hey, did you notice the new guy?" she whispered to her colleague, glancing up from her papers.
"Yeah, he seems a bit lost, but there's something about him," her colleague replied with a knowing smile.
"Something familiar, right?" she said softly, her eyes drifting back to where he sat.
The morning dragged on, and I pretended to organize my desk while watching the clock inch closer to lunchtime.
My fingers fumbled with papers as I rehearsed casual greetings in my head.
Meanwhile, Emma typed away at her computer, occasionally brushing a strand of hair from her face.
That simple gesture tightened my chest.
When she finally stood up to refill her coffee cup, I caught sight of a family photo on her desk.
A man had his arm around her shoulders, and a young girl was between them.
The sight made me hesitate, but I couldn’t resist the pull anymore.
At 12:30, Emma gathered her lunch bag and stood up.
My hands grew clammy as I watched her gather her things.
The photo of her family flashed in my mind, but I pushed the thought away.
Rising from my chair, I wiped my palms on my slacks and took deliberate steps toward her desk.
Other colleagues milled about, heading to lunch in groups.
Emma looked up as I approached, her eyes widening slightly in recognition.
She paused in arranging her lunch items; a sandwich was visible through the clear container.
The familiar feeling washed over me again as I stopped at her desk.
