Her positive and lively personality helps make Ling Ling feel more included and less isolated at school. Jie Jie's friendship significantly impacts Ling Ling's experience at the new school.
I arrived at a girls' middle school.
There were many young ladies, all around thirteen years old, in their early teens.
The girls were all very charming, like flowers in bloom.
I was the only one who was not charming and did not have a good look; hence, I did not have any friends.
I was new to this school.
Everyone had friends whom they made since the first year of middle school, so I did not have a single friend.
I only wished that I could make some friends here.
"Hey! What are you looking at?"
A girl with curly brown hair looked at me and frowned.
She was among the most popular girls in the school.
"You are Rong Rong!"
I said, my voice trembling slightly.
"Yes, I am Rong Rong! Who are you?"
Rong Rong asked me, her voice stern.
"I am Ling Ling…"
Before I could finish speaking, she cut me off.
"Oh, you must be Ling Ling, the sister of Lang Lang!"
She spoke loudly so that everyone could hear.
Everyone began to stare at me.
Lang Lang was known as the weakest girl in the school.
Everyone bullied her and made fun of her.
If she was my sister, then I would be treated the same way.
I felt my heart sinking as I realized this.
"No, I am not her sister!"
I stood frozen in place as Rong Rong circled around me like a predator.
Her eyes scanned me from head to toe, taking in every detail of my appearance.
The other girls gathered around us, whispering and giggling among themselves.
My face burned with embarrassment, but I forced myself to stand straight and look confident.
Suddenly, I took a step forward and extended my hand towards Rong Rong with a bright smile.
"I'd love to get to know all of you better," I said loudly, my voice carrying across the courtyard.
The whispering stopped, and all eyes were on me.
Rong Rong's eyes widened in surprise, clearly not expecting such a bold move from me.
Some of the girls exchanged confused glances, while others leaned in curiously.
Chen Chen, who was standing at the edge of the crowd, gave me an encouraging nod.
Rong Rong hesitated for a moment before taking my hand, her expression softening slightly.
"Alright, Ling Ling, let's see what you're made of," she said with a hint of challenge in her voice.
Chen Chen stepped forward, smiling warmly. "Welcome to our group, Ling Ling. I think you'll fit right in."
During lunch break, I sat with Chen Chen and her friends in the cafeteria.
They were all very friendly and welcoming, making me feel at ease.
We talked about various topics, from our favorite teachers to upcoming tests.
The conversation flowed naturally, and I found myself laughing along with them.
As we ate, Chen Chen asked me about my interests and hobbies.
I told her about my love for reading and playing video games.
She smiled and said she enjoyed those things too.
The other girls joined in, sharing their own interests and passions.
It was nice to see that we had so much in common.
After lunch, we headed back to class for our afternoon lessons.
I felt more confident now that I had made some friends.
As we walked down the hallway, I noticed a group of boys from the neighboring school staring at us.
They seemed to be checking us out, but I didn't pay much attention to them. When we reached our classroom, Chen Chen turned to me with a mischievous grin on her face.
"Hey Ling Ling, do you have a crush on any of those boys?"
She asked playfully.
I blushed slightly, feeling a little self-conscious about being asked such a personal question.
But before I could respond, one of the other girls chimed in.
"Oh yeah! There's this one boy named Xiao Ming who's really cute! He's always looking at me during lunch."
The other girls giggled and teased her about her crush on Xiao Ming.
I smiled politely, trying not to draw attention to myself.
But then Chen Chen turned to me again and asked, "So Ling Ling, who do you like?"
I hesitated for a moment before answering truthfully.
"To be honest, I'm not really interested in boys right now," I said matter-of-factly.
The table fell silent as everyone stared at me in shock. Chen Chen's expression changed from friendly to confused.
She looked at me like I was an alien or something!
The other girls exchanged uncomfortable glances, clearly not expecting such an answer from me.
I felt my face burning with embarrassment as I realized how strange my response must have sounded to them.
"Oh um... I mean... I'm just focusing on my studies right now," I stammered out quickly, trying to cover up my mistake.
But it was too late; the damage was already done!
Chen Chen looked at me like she didn't know what to make of me anymore!
And the other girls started whispering amongst themselves again!
