My best friend in the whole wide world asked me if he would be handsomer with two arms or four arms.
I had to stop and think about it.
I mean, I’ve known Jay since we were kids, and I’ve always known that he was a little … different.
But it wasn’t until we were teenagers that I realized just how different.
It’s hard to explain, but it’s like his body is trying to be normal, but it’s not quite sure how.
Sometimes his arms are longer than they should be, and sometimes they seem to move on their own.
And then there are the times when he seems to have an extra arm or two, just popping out of his body like he has a spare set of limbs hidden under his skin.
And the legs.
Well, let’s just say that Jay has a way of walking that is unique, and that he can run faster than anyone I’ve ever seen.
But despite all this, he is my best friend.
And I think that’s because we met before he developed all these extra bits.
I mean, we were kids when we first met, and I didn’t really notice anything out of the ordinary about him until we were teenagers.
And even then, it was hard to tell.
I mean, all boys are awkward when they go through puberty, but Jay was especially so.
And then when he started getting these extra bits — well, let’s just say that it was interesting.
The first time he got an extra arm, I thought he was just joking around.

I lean back in our shared apartment's worn leather couch, studying Jay's current form.
Two arms today, perfectly normal looking.
Nate walks in from the kitchen, beer in hand, and plops down beside me.
Jay shifts nervously, his right arm briefly splitting into two before merging back together again.
I remember the time in high school when his extra arm accidentally knocked over our chemistry experiment.

But I also think about how those arms helped carry my moving boxes up three flights of stairs last month.
"Four," I finally say, watching Jay's face light up.
"You could give the best hugs."
I lean back in my chair, really studying Jay as he demonstrates his arm-splitting trick again.
The way his right arm smoothly divides into two, then merges back - it's like watching a time-lapse of a tree branch growing.
Nate walks by, snorting at my intense concentration.
Jay's eyes flicker between us, his face a mix of anticipation and uncertainty.
I imagine him in a suit at a fancy restaurant, first with two normal arms, then with four.
The Ugly Duckling Prince
With two arms, he looks conventional, almost boring.
But with four arms, there's something graceful about it, like a renaissance statue come to life.
"Four arms," I declare firmly.
