I was wearing my usual green shirt and blue pants when I went to Dr. Kim for a facial treatment.
As I lay on the bed, he picked up a syringe and injected something into my mouth.
I didn't know what it was, but I knew it was part of the treatment.
"Doctor, what's that?"
I asked.
"It's Botox," he replied.
"Will it stop my wrinkles?"
I asked further.
"Yes," he said.
"But you don't really need Botox. You're still young."
I smiled at his compliment.
After the treatment, I paid and left.
The next morning, I woke up feeling very itchy.
I looked in the mirror and saw that my face was okay, so I shrugged it off.
But as I went downstairs for breakfast, I started to drool like crazy.
I tried to gulp down the saliva, but it was very hard.
My tongue felt weird too, like it was longer than usual.
I tried to keep it inside my mouth, but it kept slipping out and touching my chin.
I couldn't help but laugh at how silly I was being.
Throughout the day, my face remained the same, but my tongue kept getting bigger and bigger.
By nightfall, I could no longer fit it into my mouth, so I had to let it hang out.
I tried to keep myself together, but it was very hard.
The next morning, I went back to Dr. Kim because I knew something was wrong.
The Ugly Duckling
I burst into Dr. Kim's office without an appointment.
The receptionist looked up at me in shock as I stood there, my elongated tongue flopping against my chest.
Saliva dripped from the end of my tongue onto the floor, creating a small puddle.
"Mr. Johnson?" she asked, her voice trembling.
"What happened to you?"
I tried to explain, but all that came out was a garbled mess of sounds.
My tongue was too big to form words properly, and I could feel it sliding around in my mouth.
Drool splashed onto the front of my green shirt, leaving a stain.
Just then, Dr. Kim emerged from his office, clipboard in hand.
He froze mid-step when he saw me standing there, my tongue dangling from my mouth like a limp noodle.
The Ugly Duckling
"Mr. Johnson?" he repeated, his eyes wide with surprise.
I nodded, trying to speak again but only managing a series of unintelligible grunts and groans.
Dr. Kim ushered me into his office quickly, grabbing a handful of paper towels on the way.
I slumped down into the patient chair, trying to curl my tongue back into my mouth but unable to do so.
It was too long now, stretching down past my chin and resting on my chest like a fat snake. Dr. Kim examined my tongue closely, his eyes wide with amazement.
"How long has this been going on?" he asked, taking careful measurements with his ruler.
I shrugged helplessly, unable to form words through the constant drooling.
"I don't know," I managed to mumble finally, spitting out a wad of saliva onto the floor.
Dr. Kim handed me a tissue and I wiped at my chin gratefully.
"It started this morning," I said, trying to speak more clearly despite the constant interference from my oversized tongue.
The Ugly Duckling
"I woke up feeling itchy and then...this happened."
Dr. Kim nodded thoughtfully, making some notes on his clipboard.
"Have you experienced any other symptoms besides the itching and drooling?"
I shook my head, feeling a bit self-conscious about the puddle of saliva forming on the paper covering the examination chair.
Dr. Kim pulled out a small light and peered into my mouth, examining my elongated tongue closely.
"Does it hurt?" he asked, his voice muffled by the proximity of his face to mine.
I shook my head again, trying to speak but only managing a garbled "Woof-yes."
More saliva dribbled down my chin and I grabbed another tissue from the box on the counter, dabbing at my mouth in embarrassment.
Dr. Kim straightened up and pulled out my patient file from his desk drawer.
"I think I know what happened," he said, flipping through the pages.
"The injection I gave you yesterday contained a compound that's causing this unusual reaction."
I tried to ask him what he meant, but all that came out was another unintelligible series of sounds and grunts.
Dr. Kim turned to his cabinet and pulled out a small vial filled with clear liquid.
