I stared at myself in the floor-to-ceiling mirror, scrutinizing every inch of my body.
My breasts looked okay in my new bra, my dress wasn’t too short, and my shoes weren’t too flashy.
Satisfied with my reflection, I turned to the side and back again, checking to see if my dress would ride up too high in the back when I bent over.
"Stop fussing, Sienna. You look amazing," my mom said from behind me.
I turned around and smiled at her reflection in the mirror.
"Thanks, Mom. It’s just been a long time since I’ve had a real job."
"You’re going to do fine," she said, giving me a reassuring smile.
"I’m just worried that I won’t be able to see Luca during the day. What if he gets sick or hurt?"
"He’s perfectly fine, and Jade will take good care of him. Besides, you need to start thinking about yourself for a change. It’s okay to accept help from others sometimes."
I nodded, knowing she was right.
It’d been four years since I’d left my ex-husband, and I was still learning how to be independent again.
Not that I’d been dependent on him financially—I’d worked throughout our marriage and saved my own money.
But I’d been so controlled and manipulated by him that I’d lost myself completely.
The Tyrant's Assistant
I wrapped my arms around my mom’s waist and pulled her into a hug.
She smelled like lavender, the same perfume she’d worn since I was a kid.
It was comforting, and it steadied my nerves a little.
When I pulled back, she straightened out my dress and brushed a piece of lint off of my shoulder.
It was her way of fussing without actually saying anything.
"I’m going to grab my purse and head out," I said, walking over to my nightstand.
I picked up my leather purse and car keys, feeling the cool metal against my palm.
As I walked down the hallway, I could hear Luca’s giggles coming from his bedroom.
Jade was in there with him, building something with his Legos.
I paused in the doorway and watched them for a moment, smiling at how happy Luca looked.
The Tyrant's Assistant
Seeing him happy gave me the strength to do this.
"Mom, what if I can't handle the pressure at work?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
"You've already handled more than most people ever will, Sienna," she replied, her eyes filled with unwavering confidence.
"And remember, you’re not alone anymore; we’re all here for you," Jade added, looking up from the Lego tower with a reassuring smile.
I lingered by the front door, watching as Luca added another block to the tower.
Jade sat cross-legged on the floor beside him, her long blonde hair pulled into a ponytail.
My hand trembled slightly on the doorknob as memories of my ex's strict rules about work flashed through my mind.
Mom squeezed my shoulder gently, and I forced myself to straighten my navy blazer.
"You've got this," she whispered, pressing my car keys into my palm.
The Tyrant's Assistant
The metal felt cool against my skin, grounding me in the present.
After one final glance at Luca's happy face, I adjusted my laptop bag and turned the handle.
The door clicked shut behind me, and I stepped into a future of my own making.
