I was turning 18 in a week and was not looking forward to it.
I was not one of those kids who was excited to turn 18, to be considered an adult.
For me, being an adult meant more responsibilities, and I wasn't sure I was ready for that.
I knew I had to be, but I was hoping I could put it off for a little while longer.
I wasn't sure how to be an adult.
I knew how to be independent, which I'd learned over the last four years.
But being a full-fledged adult was different.
I had so many questions about life, and I didn't know who to ask.
My mom certainly wouldn't have the answers I was looking for.
She was still learning herself.
My dad had passed away when I was fifteen, so he couldn't help me either.
That's why, when my mom told me that Max would be coming over for dinner, I was excited.
Max was my uncle's best friend and had been a part of our family since before I was born.
He was the only person who could answer my questions without judging me or trying to tell me what to do.
I hear Max's car pull into our driveway.
The old Chevy he drives is loud and clunky, and River's ears perk up at the sound.
My sister Lily races to the window and presses her face against the glass.
I try to calm my nerves by smoothing down my dress.
I'm wearing a simple white sundress with blue flowers embroidered along the hem.
It's one of my favorites, but I'm not sure if it's appropriate for dinner.
I walk over to the window and peer out.
Max is climbing out of his car, his tall frame unfolding from the driver's seat.
He reaches into the passenger seat and pulls out a wrapped package.
I wonder what it could be.
A gift for my mom or maybe something for me?
I watch as he closes the car door and turns towards the house.
My heart skips a beat when his eyes meet mine through the window.
I quickly step back, pretending to arrange the dinner plates on the table.
"Max is here," I call out to my mom in the kitchen.
"Okay," she replies, poking her head around the corner.
"Can you let him in?"
"Sure."
I walk to the front door, my hands slightly trembling as I reach for the handle.
The porch light flicks on, illuminating Max's familiar silhouette.
He's wearing a gray t-shirt and his worn jeans.
His hair is a little longer than usual, curling at the nape of his neck.
The crow's feet around his eyes crinkle as he smiles at me through the window.
River bounds past me, tail wagging, and jumps up against the door.
Max laughs, balancing the wrapped package in one hand while scratching River's ears with the other.
"Hey, kiddo," he says, his voice warm and steady.
I step aside to let him in, catching a whiff of his cedar cologne as he passes by me.
The package in his hands is wrapped in simple brown paper, tied with twine.
I step back to let him enter, acutely aware of how close he passes by me in our narrow entryway.
The wrapped package brushes against my arm as he moves past, sending a shiver down my spine.
River circles our feet, tail wagging furiously, while Lily bounces on her toes behind me.
I close the door slowly, watching Max's broad shoulders as he makes his way into the kitchen to greet my mom.
My fingers linger on the doorknob, trying to steady my racing pulse.
When Max turns back to hand me the package, our fingers brush briefly against each other.
"Sitting cross-legged on the living room floor, I carefully untie the twine from the package.
Max settles into Dad's old armchair, while River curls up at my feet.
The brown paper is soft and weathered under my fingertips.
I peel it back slowly, revealing a worn leather album underneath.
The cover is embossed with intricate patterns, the leather creased from years of use.
I run my fingers over the raised designs, feeling the slight indentations in the worn leather.
Opening to the first page, I see photos from years ago.
Max teaching me to fish at the lake, River as a puppy curled up in a ball, camping trips with Uncle Jim.
My hands tremble slightly as I turn each page, memories flooding back.
Lily peers over my shoulder, pointing at pictures of herself as a toddler playing with blocks and building forts.
"Why'd you bring this now, Max?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
He leans forward, elbows on his knees, and says, "I thought it was time you knew the truth about your dad."
Lily's eyes widen as she whispers, "What truth?"
