He relies on Lily for tutoring to maintain his grades while pursuing his passion for football. His interactions with Lily reveal a softer side as he begins to notice her beyond their academic relationship.
I was the kind of girl that would get lost in the crowd.
I was never noticed by anyone.
I was the kind of girl that would always remain in the shadow of others.
I was shy and scared to talk in front of others.
I remained hidden in my comfort zone.
I never tried to make any friends or be part of any social circle.
I remained all alone to myself.
I was a bookworm and loved to read different kinds of books.
Reading was my passion and it helped me in making my imagination run wild.
It helped me in making my own stories and tales.
Sometimes I would remain lost in my own tales and stories.
It helped me escape the real world and remain in my own world.
It was my own little world and it was only mine.
I remained all alone to myself and never tried to share anything with anyone else.
Remaining all alone to myself was kind of a relief for me.
It helped me escape the anxiety and fear that would come up inside me when I would remain surrounded by a huge crowd of people.
Remaining alone gave me a sense of relief and comfort.
It helped me in avoiding the social circle and the huge crowd that would remain present on the school campus grounds during the lunchtime break.
I would remain seated in the library during lunchtime.
The library was filled with books of different kinds.
It had a huge collection of books.
There were books ranging from science to literature.
The library was my favorite place on the school grounds.
It was the quietest place on the entire school campus grounds.
The library was filled with students who were either studying or reading books.
I sat in one corner of the library and read a book.
The book was titled "Love Story" by Erich Segal.
It was a romantic novel and it was one of my favorite books.
I had read it multiple times but still, I couldn't get enough of it.
I loved reading romance novels.
They were my favorite type of books.
I loved reading about love stories and imagining myself in the place of the main female protagonist.
I remained engrossed in my book when I felt someone standing in front of me.
I looked up to see Mrs. Thompson, our English teacher, standing in front of me. "Lily, I need to talk to you," Mrs. Thompson said as she sat down in the chair opposite mine.
I closed my book and placed it on the table in front of me as I looked at her.
"What is it, Mrs. Thompson?"
I asked her curiously.
"I need you to do something for me," Mrs. Thompson said as she placed her handbag on the table in front of her.
"What is it?"
I asked her again, curious about what she needed me to do for her.
"I need you to tutor Jake Anderson," Mrs. Thompson said as she looked at me expectantly.
"Jake Anderson?"
I repeated after her as I furrowed my eyebrows slightly in confusion.
"Yes, Jake Anderson. He's a senior and he's also our star quarterback. He's not doing well in English class and I need you to tutor him," Mrs. Thompson said as she nodded her head at me.
"Me? But Mrs. Thompson, I-"
"Please Lily, I need your help," Mrs. Thompson interrupted me before I could complete my sentence.
She looked at me pleadingly with her big brown eyes and I couldn't deny her request after looking into those pleading eyes of hers. "Okay," I said after a few seconds as I nodded my head at her slightly.
"Thank you so much, Lily," Mrs. Thompson said with a wide smile on her face as she stood up from her seat and walked away from there, leaving me all alone in the library once again.
I sat there, staring at the spot where Mrs. Thompson had been, trying to process what just happened when I heard a voice behind me.
"Did I hear my name?" Jake Anderson asked, his tone a mix of curiosity and amusement.
I turned around, startled, and nodded slowly. "Yeah, looks like I'm your new English tutor."
The school bell rang, signaling the end of classes.
I gathered my books and headed to the library, where Jake and I had agreed to meet.
My heart was racing as I walked down the quiet hallway, wondering what this session would be like.
I had heard that Jake was a great football player, but he struggled in English class.
I hoped that I could help him improve his grades.
As I entered the library, I saw Jake sitting at a table, flipping through his textbook with a furrowed brow.
He looked up and caught my eye, giving me a small smile as I approached him.
"Hey, Lily," he said, his voice warm and friendly.
I sat down across from him, opening my own book to the page we had decided to start with.
We began by going over Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, which was Jake's least favorite subject. He listened intently as I explained the themes and symbolism in the play, asking occasional questions that showed he was genuinely interested in learning.
As we worked through the material, I noticed that Jake was more than just a jock.
He was smart and funny, and he had a quick wit that made me laugh more than once during our session.
After an hour or so, we took a short break before moving on to our next topic: grammar.
Jake looked at me with a look of dread on his face as we began to review verb tenses and sentence structure.
But I reassured him that it wouldn't be too bad, and we worked through the exercises together until he felt more confident.
By the time our session came to an end, I felt like we had accomplished a lot.
Jake thanked me for my help, and I told him that it was no problem at all. "Let's do it again tomorrow?" he suggested as he packed up his things.
I nodded enthusiastically, feeling happy that our tutoring session had gone well.
"Sounds good," I said as I stood up from my chair and grabbed my backpack.
"I'll see you then," Jake said as he walked out of the library with me.
We parted ways in the hallway, each of us heading off in our own direction.
As I walked away from Jake, I couldn't help but feel a little nervous about our next session together.
For the first time, I felt like I was stepping out of my own story.
The next day, I arrived at the library a few minutes early and set up our usual spot with copies of "To Kill a Mockingbird" and my notes.
Jake walked in a few minutes later, giving me a casual wave as he sat down in the chair across from me.
We spent the first few minutes going over some of the themes and motifs in the book, discussing how they related to the plot and characters.
I was impressed by Jake's insights, which were often more thoughtful than I would have expected from someone who didn't seem to be interested in English class.
As we talked, I noticed that Jake leaned forward in his chair when he was speaking, his eyes locked on mine as if he really wanted to make sure I understood what he was saying.
It made me feel like he was really listening to me, and that he cared about what I had to say. After a while, we decided to take a short break before moving on to some of the more difficult chapters in the book.
Jake suggested that we grab a cup of coffee from the café down the street, and I agreed.
We walked out of the library together, chatting about nothing in particular as we made our way down the hallway.
As we sat down at a table by the window, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this unexpected opportunity to get to know Jake better.
He was so much more than just a jock or a good-looking guy.
He was smart and funny, and he had a kind heart too.
As we sipped our coffee, Jake looked at me thoughtfully. "You know, I never really cared much for English until now," he admitted, a hint of vulnerability in his voice.
I smiled, feeling a warmth spread through me. "I'm glad I could help change that for you."
He nodded, then hesitated before speaking again. "There's something else I've been meaning to tell you... I actually asked Mrs. Thompson to pair us up."
