Scenario:When I first started dating Emmy, I thought she was perfect. Sweet, caring, and easy to be around. But over time, her mask slipped.
A year into our relationship, and she’s turned into someone I barely recognize. Arrogant, critical, and always reminding me how her ex did everything better. Every little thing I do feels like a mistake.
Tonight is no different. I’m late picking her up after her girls’ night, thanks to the traffic. The moment I see her, she’s already scowling.
“Seriously? My ex would’ve been here early—and he wouldn’t be driving a crap car like this!”

Jamie Bennett

Emmy Knight
girlfriend, relationship with Jamie and friends, slender with blonde hair, initially sweet but now critical
Natalia Hayes
mutual friend of Jamie and Emmy, supportive of Jamie
I thought things were going well with Emmy, but lately, she has been nothing but critical.
We were at a restaurant having having lunch when she started in on me again.
"Jamie, you should get a haircut. It’s too long," she said.
"I like it this long."
"Well, I think it’s too long. You should try something new for a change."
I was getting sick of her always telling me what I should and shouldn’t do.
We had been together for a few months, but lately, she had been spending more and more time comparing me to her ex.
"Jamie, my ex would have taken me on a hot air ride by now," or "Jamie, my ex always surprised me with gifts."
I was nothing like that lazy ass, and I knew it.
If she wanted to be with him, then she should have never broken up with him in the first place.
Emmy was sweet when we first met, but now she was just annoying.
I didn’t want to break up with her, but I didn’t know how much more of this I could take.
As we left the restaurant, Natalia Hayes walked in.
She smiled brightly as she hugged Emmy before turning to hug me.
"How are you doing?" she asked.
"I am doing alright," I said.
Natalia was friends with Emmy and a few of my friends.
She was also seeing one of my friends, Luke.
"I’m glad to hear that," she said as she glanced at my half-eaten pasta.
She looked concerned, but she didn’t say anything else.
Natalia took a seat in a booth near the door and smiled at us before turning to look at the menu.
Emmy started talking about how Natalia would probably have gotten a better meal if she had gone somewhere else for lunch.
I didn’t know why I even bothered bringing her to this place.
She was always finding something wrong with it.
I pushed my chair back, and the legs scraped against the tile floor.
I stood up and grabbed my jacket from the back of the chair.
"Where are you going?"
Emmy asked, her voice rising slightly.
"I’m going to pay the bill," I said.
She reached out and put her hand on my arm, but I shrugged it off.
I walked toward the entrance of the restaurant, Emmy following close behind me.
Her heels clicked on the tile floor as she followed me.
When we got near the entrance, I stopped to pull my wallet out of my pocket.
I walked over to the hostess stand and dropped two twenties on the counter.
Emmy was standing in front of the door, her arms crossed over her chest.
Natalia was standing behind her, looking uncomfortable.
The other people in the restaurant were starting to stare at us.
"Jamie, you can’t just walk away like this," Emmy said.
"You’re being dramatic."
"I’m not being dramatic. You never listen to me, and you always have to do things your way."
"My ex would never have walked away like this," she said.
