The Truth About My Girl

Scenario:When I first started dating Emmy, I thought she was perfect. Sweet, caring, and easy to be around. But over time, her mask slipped. A year into our relationship, and she’s turned into someone I barely recognize. Arrogant, critical, and always reminding me how her ex did everything better. Every little thing I do feels like a mistake. Tonight is no different. I’m late picking her up after her girls’ night, thanks to the traffic. The moment I see her, she’s already scowling. “Seriously? My ex would’ve been here early—and he wouldn’t be driving a crap car like this!”

It’s been a while since Emmy and I have been getting along great.
Lately, however, she’s been acting strange.
She’s always critical of me and constantly compares me to her ex-boyfriend.
I don’t know what to do anymore.
I feel like I’m walking on eggshells around her.
We used to be so happy, but now it feels like we’re constantly fighting.
I love her, but I don’t know if I can continue like this.
Emmy was perfect when we first met.
She was sweet and kind, and I thought that I had found my perfect match.
But over time, she has slowly changed into someone completely different.
Now, she is nothing like the girl that I fell in love with.
She is constantly tearing me down and making me feel like I’m not good enough for her.
I try my best to please her, but no matter what I do, it’s never enough.
She is so critical and demanding.
I don’t feel like I can do anything right in her eyes anymore.
I’m not sure if I can continue in a relationship like this.
It’s not healthy for either of us.
The Truth About My Girl
I pace back and forth in my apartment, rehearsing what I’m going to say to Emmy.
I take a deep breath and pull out my phone.
My hands shake as I type out a message to her.
"Hey, can we meet at the café in the Riverside Hotel tomorrow afternoon?"
I stare at the screen for a moment before adding, "We need to talk about us."
I delete the words and retype them three times before finally hitting send.
I wait for a minute before her response comes through.
"Finally ready to step up your game?" she asks.
I ignore her jab and respond with, "What time works for you?"
Emmy sends me a thumbs-up emoji and tells me she’ll be there at two o’clock.
The Truth About My Girl
As soon as we’ve finalized our plans, my phone rings.
It’s Natalia.
"Hey girl," she says when I answer.
"What’s up?"
"I just saw your girlfriend’s latest post on social media," she tells me.
"She’s making fun of you for choosing the Riverside Hotel as a meeting place."
I roll my eyes and sigh.
"I know. She thinks it’s beneath her or something."
"Well, you can’t let her push you around like that," Natalia advises me.
"Remember that list we made of all the times she’s been super critical of you? You should bring that with you tomorrow." "I will," I tell her.
"And don’t let her walk all over you. Stand firm and say what needs to be said."
"You’re right," I agree with her.
"Thanks for calling."
"No problem," she says before hanging up.
I grab my backpack and pack the journal where I’ve been writing down all of Emmy’s criticisms of me.
The Truth About My Girl
I arrive at the café in the Riverside Hotel a little early, so I can grab a table in the corner where we’ll have some privacy.
I order two cups of coffee and a plate of pastries before finding a seat.
I sit down at the table and pull out my journal, placing it on the table in front of me.
I fidget with it for a few minutes as I wait for Emmy to arrive.
I can see through the glass doors as people walk by, and I notice Emmy strutting up to the café in her designer heels.
She’s wearing a tight red dress that is way too provocative for a casual afternoon meeting at a café.
I watch as she walks through the doors and looks around, her eyes scanning the room until they land on me.
She smiles and walks over to where I’m sitting, her heels clicking against the marble floor.
Instead of sitting across from me like a normal person would, Emmy slides into the seat next to mine, pressing her body against my arm.
"Jamie, baby," she purrs, "why are we meeting in this stuffy place when we could be somewhere more... private?"
The Truth About My Girl
"Emmy, we need to talk seriously, not hide away," I reply, trying to keep my voice steady.
She leans back, crossing her arms with a smirk. "Oh, is this about that little journal of yours?"
I hesitate, surprised she knows. "How did you—?"
