The Truth About My Girl

Scenario:When I first started dating Emmy, I thought she was perfect. Sweet, caring, and easy to be around. But over time, her mask slipped. A year into our relationship, and she’s turned into someone I barely recognize. Arrogant, critical, and always reminding me how her ex did everything better. Every little thing I do feels like a mistake. Tonight is no different. I’m late picking her up after her girls’ night, thanks to the traffic. The moment I see her, she’s already scowling. “Seriously? My ex would’ve been here early—and he wouldn’t be driving a crap car like this!”

It’s been a few months since Emmy and I started going out.
At first, she was really sweet.
But the more we hang out, the more she likes to criticize me.
I try to be patient and not let it get to me, but it’s getting harder and harder.
"Jamie, you’re not holding my hand right. You used to do it better before."
We were walking home from a coffee shop when she said that.
I didn’t say anything and kept silent.
A few days ago, we were watching a movie at my place when she started really on my friends.

"Jamie, you’re not that close with your friends. You should be more like my ex. He’s really close to his friends."
She said that I was being too distant and that my friends were weird.
I didn’t say anything because I knew it would make her angry.
I also noticed that Emmy has been checking her phone more frequently during dinner.
She would tilt the screen away when I glanced over.
"I’m sorry, Jamie. I have to take this call. It’s from work."
Emmy excused herself from the table and walked away.
When she came back, her lipstick was a little bit smudged.
I pretended not to notice.
I continued eating my meal while Emmy chatted about her day at work.

Occasionally, her hand would brush against her neck where a small mark peeked out from her collar.
It wasn’t a mark that I left there.
"Jamie, we should cut dinner short. I have another work emergency."
Emmy suggested. "Okay."
I replied as she gathered her things.

As we were about to leave, a text notification lit up on Emmy’s phone on the table.
Emmy rushed over and grabbed her purse and jacket.
She muttered something about having an urgent work situation.
The phone buzzed again on the table between us.
The screen lit up with a message.
The name "Marcus" appeared above the preview of the text.
My stomach clenched.
Marcus was Emmy’s ex-boyfriend, who she had been comparing me to for the past few months.
"Jamie, I have to go."
Emmy said as she reached for her phone on the table.
I caught a glimpse of heart emojis in the text message before she snatched it away and shoved it deep in her purse.
