The Truth About My Girl

Scenario:When I first started dating Emmy, I thought she was perfect. Sweet, caring, and easy to be around. But over time, her mask slipped. A year into our relationship, and she’s turned into someone I barely recognize. Arrogant, critical, and always reminding me how her ex did everything better. Every little thing I do feels like a mistake. Tonight is no different. I’m late picking her up after her girls’ night, thanks to the traffic. The moment I see her, she’s already scowling. “Seriously? My ex would’ve been here early—and he wouldn’t be driving a crap car like this!”

It’s been a few months since Emmy and I started going out.
At first, she was really sweet and caring.
But now, she’s always on my case about something.
I feel like I can never do anything right.
I feel like I’m walking on eggshells when we’re together.
At first, she would never say a bad word about me or my actions, but now, it seems every other day, she’s nagging or complaining about something I’ve done or said.
I try to be patient with her, but it’s getting really old, really fast.
We were talking the other day and—
"Emmy, you used to be so much fun. What happened? Why are you always so critical and harsh towards me these days? Did I do something wrong?"
I asked her one day.
She looked at me like I was crazy.
"Nothing’s wrong. Don’t be so paranoid," she said.
"Paranoid? You used to like everything I did. Now it seems like no matter what I do, it’s wrong. Did I do something wrong? Did I offend you in some way?"
The Truth About My Girl
"Jamie, you’re being ridiculous. I’m just stressed out, that’s all. It has nothing to do with you."
I leaned back in my seat, feeling exhausted.
I didn’t know what to say.
I knew Emmy was stressed out, but it seemed like she was taking it out on me.
She was always picking at me about something.
I tried to be patient and understanding, but it was getting really old.
I knew I wasn’t perfect, but I didn’t think I deserved to be treated this way.
I was starting to feel like I was walking on eggshells when we were together.
I never knew when she was going to snap at me or say something hurtful.
It was really frustrating and confusing.
The Truth About My Girl
I didn’t know what to do or how to make things better between us.
I just wanted her to be happy and for us to be able to have fun together again like we used to.
"Jamie, I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be so critical. It’s just that my ex was always so punctual and considerate. He would never keep me waiting like this," she said, looking at me with a scowl on her face.
"Emmy, I’m sorry. Traffic is terrible tonight. I’ll try to be more aware of the time in the future," I said, trying not to get defensive.
She looked at me for a moment, then nodded her head.
"Okay. Just try harder next time," she said, then turned her attention back out the window. "Jamie, you know what else my ex would do? He would always open the car door for me," she said suddenly, turning back towards me with a look of disgust on her face.
"Emmy, come on. That’s not a big deal," I said, feeling frustrated by her constant comparisons of me to her ex-boyfriend.
"It is a big deal! He cared about me and showed it in little ways like that. You never even think about doing things like that for me," she said, crossing her arms over her chest and looking away from me.
"Emmy, I do care about you. I just don’t think those kinds of things are a big deal," I said, feeling defensive.
"It’s not just about opening doors for me. It’s about showing respect and courtesy," she said, looking back at me with a serious expression on her face.

"Jamie, it’s not just about the door; it’s about feeling valued," she continued, her voice softening slightly.
I sighed, trying to find the right words.
"Emmy, I didn’t realize how important those things were to you, but I want to make this work and show you that I care."
I pulled into a parking spot outside Emmy’s favorite coffee shop, hoping that this small gesture would help ease the tension between us.
She was still fuming about my lateness and had her arms crossed tightly over her chest.
We sat in silence for a moment, the only sound being the hum of the engine.
I reached over and turned the key, shutting off the car.
My hand went to the door handle, but I hesitated.
The Truth About My Girl
I remembered what she had said about chivalry earlier.
I started to get out to open her door, but she huffed and got out before I could make it around the car.
I followed her into the shop, watching as her shoulders stiffened with each step.
