Scenario:When I first started dating Emmy, I thought she was perfect. Sweet, caring, and easy to be around. But over time, her mask slipped.
A year into our relationship, and she’s turned into someone I barely recognize. Arrogant, critical, and always reminding me how her ex did everything better. Every little thing I do feels like a mistake.
Tonight is no different. I’m late picking her up after her girls’ night, thanks to the traffic. The moment I see her, she’s already scowling.
“Seriously? My ex would’ve been here early—and he wouldn’t be driving a crap car like this!”

I thought things were going great with Emmy.
We had been together for a few months and I had been patient with her.
When we first started going out, she was critical of me, but I had tried to understand her point of view and waited for her to calm down.
However, over time, she never seemed to calm down.
She was always finding something that she was not happy with and making sure that I knew about it.
I had tried to talk to her about it, but she had blown me off.
Now, I found myself waiting for her to get mad at something I had done.
I did not know if I could take it much longer.
It did not seem healthy to me.
I did not think relationships were supposed to be like this.
Emmy had been so sweet when we first started going out.
However, now she seemed to be constantly down on me.
I had tried to think of what I could do to get her to be sweet like she was in the beginning.
I had decided to take her to Bella Luna, the Italian restaurant where we had our first date.
I had spent hours trying to plan the perfect evening for her.
I had even made a reservation for 7:00 PM and had rehearsed what I was going to say to her when I picked her up.
I wanted things to go smoothly and to be able to recreate the spark that we had at the beginning of our relationship.
I had even gone so far as to wash my car and vacuum it out.
Emmy hated any mess, so I knew that if I wanted her to be happy, I needed to make sure my car was clean.
I had ironed my best shirt twice, just in case there were any wrinkles in it the first time.
My shoes were polished until they shined.
When I went home, I pulled out my wallet and looked through it.
I realized that I was going to have to stop by an ATM on my way out.
Emmy hated it when I paid with a credit card, so I would need some cash for dinner and whatever else we did tonight.
I got into my car and headed out.
I gripped the steering wheel tightly as I drove. When I got near Emmy’s apartment, I glanced over at the clock on my dashboard.
It was 7:45 PM and Emmy was already standing outside waiting for me.
She was tapping her foot impatiently on the ground as she waited for me.
I took a deep breath before parking the car and getting out of it.
I walked over to the passenger door and opened it for Emmy.
She yanked the door open and slid into the seat.
Her heels clicked against the pavement as she got in.
I closed the door behind her and walked around to get in the driver’s seat.
The silence was thick in the car as I got in.
I opened my mouth to explain about the accident on Fifth Street that had caused me to be late, but she cut me off with a wave of her hand.
"Save it," she snapped, pulling down the visor to check her makeup in the mirror.
"I’ve been standing out there for twenty minutes looking like an idiot."
Her voice was cold and harsh as she spoke.
