Scenario:When I first started dating Emmy, I thought she was perfect. Sweet, caring, and easy to be around. But over time, her mask slipped.
A year into our relationship, and she’s turned into someone I barely recognize. Arrogant, critical, and always reminding me how her ex did everything better. Every little thing I do feels like a mistake.
Tonight is no different. I’m late picking her up after her girls’ night, thanks to the traffic. The moment I see her, she’s already scowling.
“Seriously? My ex would’ve been here early—and he wouldn’t be driving a crap car like this!”

mutual friend of Jamie and Emmy, supportive of Jamie
It’s been a month since Emmy and I started going out.
At first, she was really sweet.
But now, she’s always finding fault in me.
Comparing me to her ex, who was a fucking moron.
I told her that I didn’t like it, but she just said that she was only trying to help me become a better person.
I didn’t think that I was a bad person.
If I had to compare myself to someone, it would probably be my twin brother.
We were both average built and had brown hair.
Emmy was slender with blonde hair.
She wasn’t ugly or anything, but she wasn’t my type.
I thought that we should break up.
But every time that I tried, she threatened to kill herself.
She blackmailed me into staying in the relationship with her.
One of our mutual friends, Natalia Hayes, told me that Emmy wasn’t like this before.
Natalia said that Emmy was always sweet and caring.
She didn’t know why she changed.
But I did.
Emmy was just like her ex.
She was arrogant, critical, and always trying to control me.
I was already planning to leave her, but I needed to make sure that I did it safely.
I didn’t want her to hurt herself or anyone else.
I pulled up to Emmy’s apartment building and dropped her off.
Then I sat in my car and stared at my phone.
My hands were shaking as I opened a new note on my phone.
I titled it "Leaving Emmy."
Then I started typing out the steps that I would need to take to leave her safely.
1. Secure all of my important documents and belongings at Natalia’s place.
Natalia had already offered to help me, so I knew that I could count on her. 2. Move my stuff from my apartment to Natalia’s place in small amounts over time.
I didn’t want Emmy to notice that I was moving things out of the apartment.
3. Write down Emmy’s schedule.
I knew that she worked at a hair salon during the day, but I wasn’t sure about the exact hours.
I would have to ask her for her schedule so that I could plan when to move my stuff out of the apartment.
4. Figure out how to block Emmy’s number from my phone.
I didn’t know how to do this yet, but I would have to figure it out somehow.
5. Plan where I would go after I left Emmy.
I had a few friends who might be willing to let me stay with them for a while until I got back on my feet. 6. Be prepared for Emmy’s reaction when she found out that I left her.
I knew that she would be furious when she realized what had happened, but there wasn’t anything that I could do about it now.
"Jamie," Emmy said, pulling me out of my thoughts.
"I’m going inside now."
"Alright," I replied, not looking up from my phone screen.
"Goodnight."
"Goodnight," Emmy said before getting out of the car and heading into her apartment building.
I watched as she went inside before starting up my car and driving away.
As soon as I got home, I opened the notes app on my phone again and started typing more things down for my plan:
Emmy’s schedule:
- Monday: work from 9am-5pm
- Tuesday: work from 9am-5pm, then go to the grocery store and park in the empty lot behind the store
- Wednesday: work from 9am-5pm, then go to Natalia’s place and move some stuff out of my apartment.
- Thursday: work from 9am-5pm, then go to the grocery store and park in the empty lot behind the store
- Friday: work from 9am-5pm, then go to Natalia’s place and move some more stuff out of my apartment.
- Saturday: take a day off of work to move more stuff out of my apartment
I pulled into the empty parking lot behind the grocery store and parked my car.
Then I pulled up the domestic abuse hotline website on my phone and started typing out a message for one of the counselors. Hello.
I need some help with something.
I am in a relationship with a girl named Emmy.
We have been dating for a year now, but lately she has been acting strange.
She is always threatening to kill herself if I leave her, and she is constantly finding fault in me.
She says that her ex was better than me at everything, even though he was a huge moron.
I’m scared that she might try to hurt herself or someone else if I leave her.
I need some help figuring out how to leave her safely.
The counselor’s response appeared in the chat window after a few minutes.
You’re taking the right steps by planning ahead.
Here are a few things that you can do to make sure that you stay safe while breaking up with Emmy:
- Inform your workplace about your situation so that they are prepared for any potential harassment from Emmy. - Save screenshots of any threatening messages that Emmy sends you. - Arrange check-ins with Natalia during the break-up process so that you don’t have to be alone when you tell Emmy that you’re leaving her.
- Have a safety plan in place for your belongings and important documents in case Emmy tries to steal or destroy them.
I screenshot the counselor’s suggestions before quickly closing the chat window as a car pulled into the parking lot, its headlights sweeping across my windshield.
The driver parked a few spots away from me before getting out and walking into the grocery store.
