treasure hunt
I still can’t believe it.
A treasure hunt!
It sounds like something from one of my favorite mystery novels, the kind of adventure I’ve always longed for.
And now, here I am.
Standing in a long line of strangers winding up the driveway of a massive old mansion, each of us waiting to begin our own real-life treasure hunt.
The sun beats down on me, and I shift impatiently.
I wish they’d hurry up and let us inside already.
I have a feeling that time is going to be a factor with this hunt, and I want to get started before anyone else has a chance to move ahead of me.
"Who would have thought, huh?" says the woman behind me in line.
She’s talking to the man standing behind her.
"Mr. Hart, sending out invitations like this. I still can’t believe I got one."
"Me, either," the man says.
"Did you hear that he only invited people who are complete strangers to him?"
The woman gasps.
"That makes it even weirder. Do you think he’s a billionaire or something?"
The man laughs.
"If he’s sending out treasure hunt invitations to people he’s never met, he must be."
I turn around and smile at them both.
"I think he definitely is," I say.
"He’s giving away a million dollars after all. At the least."
The woman nods.

The line inches forward, and I turn back to face the front door.
I’m finally close enough to see inside the foyer of the mansion.
The air inside is cool and clean, with a faint scent of aged wood.
I step through the doorway and look around.
The foyer is opulent, with intricately carved wooden paneling on the walls and a grand staircase curving up to the floors above.
Dusty chandeliers hang from the high ceiling, and the walls are lined with cobweb-covered portraits.
A man stands off to one side, watching us as we enter.
He’s tall and lean, dressed in dark jeans and a black t-shirt that shows off his muscles.
His hair is dark too, cut short in a way that accentuates his sharp jawline.
He looks familiar, but I can’t place him.
I wonder if he’s one of Mr. Reed’s employees, or if he’s here for the hunt like the rest of us. A woman steps up beside me, her eyes fixed on a map she’s holding in her hand.
She’s petite, with long black hair pulled back into a ponytail.

She’s dressed in a black tank top and leggings, and she looks like she means business.
"Hi," I say to her.
"I’m Evelyn."
She glances up at me briefly before returning her attention to her map.
"Lily," she says curtly.
A man joins us then, grinning from ear to ear.
He’s tall and muscular, with blond hair cut short on the sides and longer on top.
He’s dressed in athletic shorts and a sleeveless shirt that shows off his broad shoulders and chiseled arms.
"Jason Reed," he says, holding out his hand for me to shake.
"Cameron Blake."
I take his hand in mine and smile back at him.
"It’s nice to meet you both."
Lily nods at me briefly before turning back to her map again.
Cameron smiles at me and leans forward conspiratorially.
"So," he says quietly, "what do you think about this whole thing?"
I shrug my shoulders.
"I have no idea what to expect," I say honestly.
"But I’m excited."
Cameron chuckles loudly then, drawing Lily’s attention again briefly before she goes back to studying her map. "I’ve heard rumors about Jason Reed," she says quietly then, her eyes still fixed on her map.
"That he’s not someone you want to mess with."
