I was attending fitness classes with my personal trainer Amy Thompson.
She was a good trainer but also super mean and demanding with her clients.
She made sure her clients were working out till they were almost dead.
She made sure we were doing our best while working out; she made us do more and more till we were completely drained.
She was strict, very strict.
Well, sometimes I do think she was a bit cruel.
Well, Amy had this rule.
Once a week we had to get on the scale in front of everyone else in the class.
If we had gained weight that week we had to do twenty push ups in front of everyone else.
If someone was still gaining weight after the push ups they had to do another twenty and so on.
It was really embarrassing.
I hated doing push ups.
I hated getting on the scale every week.
It was our weekly weigh in.
My heart was beating fast.
I didn’t want to get on that scale.
The other clients were forming their usual circle around the weighing area, their eyes fixed on me.
Amy was standing beside the scale, her clipboard in her hand, tapping her foot impatiently.
I was four months pregnant now and my pregnancy was showing.
I had gained weight.
The doctor said it was normal and even healthy but Amy didn’t care about that.
She just cared about the scale.
"Today, Carter," Amy barked, pointing at the scale with her clipboard pen.
I glanced at the exit door, considering walking out but I had already paid for these sessions so I couldn’t just walk out on them.
Taking a deep breath, I stepped forward, my hands trembling.
I stepped onto the scale, my feet cold against the metal surface.
The digital numbers flickered for a moment before settling on a number.
Amy’s face twisted into a sneer as she scribbled something on her clipboard.
"Three pounds," she said, her voice dripping with disdain.
"Twenty push-ups, right now."
She pointed at the mat in front of me.
My arms shook as I lowered myself to the floor, trying to maintain proper form despite my growing belly.
The other clients shifted uncomfortably, avoiding eye contact.
I managed five push-ups before my arms gave out.
Amy stood over me, tapping her foot impatiently.
"Pathetic," she said, "Start over. And this time, do them properly."
"Amy, I need to tell you something," I gasped, struggling to catch my breath.
"What could possibly be more important than your fitness right now?" she snapped, crossing her arms.
"I'm pregnant, Amy," I blurted out, my voice trembling with a mix of fear and defiance.
