If I had known what would happen after I pressed that button, I wouldn’t have done it.
I was supposed to be dead by now.
I didn’t know that until I died.
I also didn’t know that the train had the power to manipulate time.
It was an old, mysterious train that stood in the junkyard at the outskirts of the city.
Rumor had it that the train was haunted, and many were afraid to even get close to it.
Another rumor had it that the train was cursed; anyone who boarded the train would never return.
I didn’t believe any of those rumors.
I thought that there must be something valuable hidden in the train, which was why people were keeping others away from it.
I was an adventurer, or rather, a reckless and impulsive brave guy.
One night, I snuck into the junkyard and boarded the mysterious train.
The moment I stepped inside, I felt a chill run down my spine.
But I was determined to find out what was inside this train.
Suddenly, a figure appeared before me.
She was a girl with a red beret on her head and overalls on her body.
She looked like an engineer and was holding a large wrench in her hand.
I froze at the sound of the door slamming.
My heart was pounding in my chest, and I could feel the adrenaline rushing through my veins.
The girl with the red beret tightened her grip on the wrench, her eyes narrowing into slits.
The train car's dim lighting flickered, casting strange shadows across her face.
I took a step back, my hands raised in a gesture of surrender.
"I don't want any trouble," I said, my voice shaking slightly.
But as I moved backward, my foot caught on an uneven floorboard, and I stumbled.
The girl took a step forward, her movements slow and deliberate.
"You shouldn't be here," she said, her voice low and menacing.
As she spoke, a red light began pulsing from somewhere in the ceiling, bathing everything in an eerie glow.
The air seemed to grow colder, and I could see my breath misting in front of me.
The girl's expression softened as she watched me shiver on the floor.
"I'm Lila," she said, holding out her free hand to help me up.
Her voice was gentler now, and I could see a hint of concern in her eyes.
The red light continued to pulse, casting an otherworldly glow over everything.
I grabbed her hand and let her pull me to my feet.
"I'm Alex," I said, my voice still shaking slightly.
"Thanks for helping me."
Lila nodded and lowered her wrench, though she didn't put it away.
She gestured toward the door at the far end of the car.
"We need to get moving," she said.
"That light means the train is activating its time-travel mechanism. We have to get to the control room before it's too late."
My eyes widened in surprise.
"Time travel?"
I asked, my voice incredulous.
Lila nodded.
"This train can travel through time," she explained.
"It's not something we can control, but we can influence it. We just have to get to the control room in time."
I stared at her for a moment, trying to process what she was saying.
Then I nodded and followed her toward the door. The corridor was narrow and dimly lit, with flickering fluorescent lights overhead.
The walls were covered in old pipes and machinery, and the air smelled of grease and smoke.
Lila led the way, her wrench at the ready in case we encountered any more obstacles.
I followed close behind, trying to keep up with her long strides.
As we walked, the pulsing red light grew brighter and brighter until it was almost blinding.
I could feel a strange energy building in the air, like static electricity before a storm.
Suddenly, I tripped again, this time over a loose pipe on the floor.
I fell hard onto my hands and knees, scraping my palms on the rough metal surface.
Lila stopped and turned around, concern etched on her face.
"Are you okay?" she asked, rushing back to help me up. I nodded, wincing as I stood up again.
"Yeah, I'm fine," I said, brushing off my clothes.
But as I looked up at Lila's face, I saw something that made my heart skip a beat. Her eyes were wide with fear, and her skin was deathly pale.
"Lila, what's wrong?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
"It's too late," she replied, her voice trembling. "The train's already started its journey, and we're not in control."
"But where are we going?" I pressed, feeling the panic rising in my chest.
