"Hello?"
I called out, but there was no answer.
I walked over to the box and gave it a push.
It didn't move.
I pushed it harder, but it still didn't move.
I kicked it in frustration, but it didn't move at all.
Just as I was about to give up, it creaked and groaned, then slowly raised about half an inch off the ground.
I gasped.
It was moving!
It stopped again, but after another push, it raised a bit higher.
After a few more pushes, it was about six inches off the ground.
Suddenly, with one final push, it lifted off the ground and started to spin.
Faster and faster it spun until it was just a blue blur.
With one final flash of light, it disappeared with a strange warping sound.
I gasped in shock in the sudden silence.
What had just happened?
Where did it go?
Just as I turned to walk away, I heard the warping sound again, getting closer and closer.
Suddenly, there was a flash of light and the box appeared right in front of me again.
It slowed to a stop and settled to the ground with a gentle thud.
I pushed it open and peered inside.
To my surprise, it wasn't just a few feet of wires and circuit boards like I had expected.
It was much bigger on the inside!
A long corridor stretched away into darkness from the doorway.
The Time Traveler's Companion
I hesitated at the threshold, my hand gripping the doorframe.
The corridor was lit by a faint blue glow that seemed to pulse and flicker.
It cast strange shadows on the walls, which seemed to be made of some kind of metallic mesh.
I took a deep breath and placed one foot inside.
The floor was solid metal, cool against my skin.
The Time Traveler's Companion
The air inside was different from the air outside - it was cooler and had an electric tingle to it.
I took another step, then another, my sneakers making soft tapping sounds against the metal grating of the floor.
The door creaked shut behind me with a final click.
I spun around, but the door was gone, replaced by a smooth wall that stretched away in either direction.
My heart pounded in my chest.
I took another step forward, then another, my eyes fixed on the corridor ahead.
The blue light pulsed steadily, casting strange shadows that made me jump at nothing.
I stopped for a moment and reached out to touch the wall.
It vibrated slightly under my fingertips, humming with some kind of power.
The corridor stretched away in front of me, curving gently to the left.
It seemed to go on forever, but I knew it had to end somewhere.
I started walking again, my footsteps echoing off the walls.
As I walked, I noticed that the walls were covered in small circular patterns, like the inside of a giant machine.
The humming grew louder as I walked, changing pitch and becoming more rhythmic.
The Time Traveler's Companion
Suddenly, I saw a faint glow around the bend ahead.
"Who's there?" a voice called out, echoing down the corridor.
I froze, my heart racing. "I could ask you the same thing," I replied, trying to keep my voice steady.
"You're not supposed to be here," the voice continued, now closer and more urgent.
