I swam excitedly to meet up with my 6 other sisters.
"Hey girls, I found something cool!"
I said excitedly.
"What is it?"
Attina asked.
"I don’t want to hear it. Whatever it is, it’s not worth getting hurt over," she said.
"No, it’s really cool. I promise you won’t get hurt," I said.
"So what is it?"
Adella asked.
"I found a pearl. Not just any pearl, but a big shiny one," I said excitedly.
"A pearl? That sounds amazing! Let’s go see it!"
Alana said.
"Yeah, let’s go," Aquata said.
"Are you guys sure you want to go? It’s really deep," I said.
"We can handle it," Arista said.
"Besides, we can’t let you go by yourself. What if something happens to you?"
Andrina said.
"Alright, but if we get lost or hurt, it’s not my fault," I said.
"Whatever, let’s just go already," Aquata said.
So we all set off toward the pearl.
As we swam deeper and deeper, some of the girls started to panic.
"I don’t like this. Let’s go back," Aria said.
"No way, we’re almost there," I said.
"We can’t turn around now. We’ve come too far," Attina said.
The Ten Sisters
I led them through a narrow passage between two coral formations.
The water was getting colder and darker, but I could still see the pearl glowing in front of us.
"I don’t like this," Attina whispered.
"Come on, it’s just a little further," I said.
As we swam closer, the pearl started to glow even brighter.
It was like it was calling to us.
"Wow, look at that," Aquata said.
"It’s so pretty," Adella said.
We all swam closer and closer until we were right next to the pearl.
It was even more beautiful up close.
The Ten Sisters
The golden light was shining so brightly that it was hard to look directly at it.
Suddenly, Attina grabbed my arm and pulled me back.
"Ariel, I don’t think we should be here," she said.
"What are you talking about? We’re fine," I said, shaking her off. "No, we’re not. This feels wrong. Let’s go back," she said.
But I didn’t listen.
I kept swimming closer and closer to the pearl until I was right next to it.
And then, something strange happened.
The pearl started to pulse with an otherworldly light.
It was like it was alive and calling to us.
My sisters all gathered around me, their faces filled with fear and wonder.
"Ariel, what’s happening?"
Aria asked.
"I don’t know, but I think we should get out of here," I said.
But it was too late.
The pearl started to glow even brighter and began to pull us toward it.
We tried to swim away, but we couldn’t move.
The pearl had us trapped in its power. "Ariel, what have you done?"
Attina cried out in fear.
"I didn’t mean for this to happen," I said, trying to reassure her.
But before I could say anything else, the pearl suddenly released a burst of light that surrounded us all.
The Ten Sisters
It was so bright that I had to close my eyes against its intensity.
When I opened them again, everything had changed.
We were no longer in the ocean; we were somewhere else entirely. My sisters all formed a circle around the pearl as it glowed brighter and brighter in front of us.
As the golden bubbles burst, we felt the weight of the ocean crushing down on us.
My sisters and I struggled to breathe, but it was no use.
Our mermaid tails were gone, replaced by human legs that flailed helplessly at the ocean floor.
We were trapped in a sea of water, unable to move or escape.
Panic set in as we realized that we were going to drown.
Attina tried to calm us down, but her voice was muffled by the water.
She gestured for us to stay still and wait for the water to settle.
But it was hard to remain calm when our lungs were burning and our bodies were screaming for oxygen.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the water began to clear.
We could see each other again, and we knew that we had to get out of there as fast as we could. We pushed off from the ocean floor and kicked our way towards the surface.
The Ten Sisters
It was a slow and agonizing process, but eventually we made it to the top.
"Where are we?" Alana gasped, looking around at the unfamiliar shoreline.
"I think... I think we're on land," Attina replied, her voice trembling with disbelief.
"But how is that possible? We were just in the ocean!" Arista exclaimed, her eyes wide with confusion.
Gasping for air, I tread water on the surface, scanning my sisters' faces for any sign of panic.
The afternoon sun beats down on us, blinding me with its intensity.
I blink away the saltwater that stings my eyes, my legs kicking awkwardly beneath me.
Attina grabs hold of my shoulder, steadying herself as she coughs up seawater.
One by one, my sisters emerge beside us, their wet hair plastered to their bare shoulders.
The Ten Sisters
I glance down at myself, realizing that our shells are gone.
We're completely exposed to the elements.
I drift closer to a patch of calmer water, my legs still awkwardly kicking beneath me.
The sun's glare on the waves makes it hard to see clearly, but as the water stills, I catch glimpses of my body below the surface.
My sisters gather around me, forming a tight circle as we try to understand our new human forms.
Attina gasps as she notices the unfamiliar anatomy between her legs.
"Look," she whispers, pointing down at herself.
The Ten Sisters
One by one, we each investigate our changed bodies with tentative touches, confusion and embarrassment etched on our faces.
Aria starts crying softly while Aquata tries to comfort her.
I scan the horizon, squinting against the glare until I spot a thin dark line - land.
Pointing it out to my sisters, I start paddling in that direction while they follow hesitantly.
Our new legs make swimming awkward and tiring.
The waves push against us as we slowly make progress, our bare bodies rising and falling with each swell.
Attina keeps close to Aria, who is still sniffling.
Aquata and Alana swim side by side, their faces set in determination.
I lead the way, my muscles aching with each stroke.
"Do you think we'll ever change back?" Aria's voice quivers, fear lacing her words.
"I don't know," Aquata replies, her eyes fixed on the distant shore. "But we have to keep moving if we're going to find out."
"Maybe someone on land can help us," Alana suggests, though uncertainty hangs heavy in her tone.
The Ten Sisters
I kick my legs harder against the waves, feeling the burn in my unfamiliar muscles.
"Keep going!" I call back to my sisters, my voice hoarse from swallowing seawater.
The beach ahead reveals itself more clearly now - a stretch of pale sand bordered by towering palm trees.
Attina matches my pace, her wet hair streaming behind her as she helps guide Aria forward.
Aquata and Alana flank us on either side, while Arista and Adella bring up the rear, all of us fighting against the current.
The Ten Sisters
When Aria starts to lag, I grab her hand and pull, refusing to let the waves separate us.
Together, we surge toward the shore, determined to reclaim our future.
I drag myself through the shallows, my arms trembling as waves push me toward the beach.
The wet sand scrapes against my bare stomach and legs while I crawl forward on hands and knees.
Behind me, my sisters splash through the surf, their labored breathing mingling with the sound of breaking waves.
Attina helps pull Aria through the ankle-deep water, while Aquata and Alana stumble onto the beach nearby.
The coarse sand sticks to our naked skin as we crawl further from the water's edge.
The Ten Sisters
My muscles burn with exhaustion as I finally roll onto my back, chest heaving.
I push myself up on trembling arms, sand falling from my wet skin as I rise.
The beach stretches empty in both directions, lined with dense palm trees and rocky cliffs that plunge into the ocean.
My sisters remain sprawled nearby, still catching their breath.
Shielding my eyes against the bright sun, I scan the horizon for any sign of boats or buildings along the coastline.
The vast ocean spreads before us, its waves now seeming alien and hostile.
The Ten Sisters
A distant seabird circles overhead, but otherwise we're completely alone.
"What do you see?"
Attina asks, her voice barely audible over the sound of the waves.
I sit up on the damp sand, my legs stretched out in front of me.
The foreign sensation of air on my bare skin sends a shiver through me as I study my new feet and toes.
I flex them experimentally, watching the muscles and tendons move beneath pale flesh.
My sisters' voices fade into background noise as I trace the curve of my calf, marveling at how different it feels from my old tail.
When Attina asks if I'm listening to her plan, I continue examining my knees in fascination.
The Ten Sisters
"Do you think we'll ever change back?" Aria's voice trembles with uncertainty.
"We have to find the amulet first," Attina replies, determination hardening her tone.
"And if we don't?" Aquata interjects, her eyes wide with fear.
