I smile down at Lily as she wraps her arms around my waist.
It’s always great to get a hug from one of my students, especially this little sweetheart.
"Of course, mija. I’ll always be here for you," I tell her, running my hand up and down her back affectionately.
She steps back from me, and Ms. Janet crouches down to pick her up.
"I was just telling Ms. Maria how wonderful you are with the children," Ms. Janet explains.
It warms my heart to hear that.
I sit down in the chair across from them in their living room, but Ms. Maria Rodriguez reaches out and grabs my hand, squeezing it gently.
She’s Lily’s other mom, and they’re both great about keeping me informed about Lily and her needs while she’s with me at school.
"You truly are, Daniela," Ms. Maria tells me, releasing my hand so that I can give her a squeeze back in response.
I look down at Lily, who is smiling at me from within her mother’s arms.
"I just love having her in my class. She’s such a sweet girl," I respond, running my hand up from Ms. Maria’s shoulder and down her arm before letting go of her completely.
Ms. Janet nods in agreement with my assessment of their little girl.
"She talks about you all of the time at home," Ms. Janet lets me know.
"What about?"
I ask curiously.
I watch as Lily squirms out of Ms. Janet’s arms, her little feet hitting the carpet with a thud.
She toddles over to Ms. Maria, who’s sitting on the couch beside me.
"Mommy!" she exclaims, throwing her arms around Ms. Maria’s neck.
Ms. Maria catches her daughter and pulls her into her lap, giving her a tight hug.
I lean back in my chair as I watch them hug.
It reminds me of all the hugs I’ve gotten from my students over the years.
Ms. Janet sits down on Ms. Maria’s other side, and they’re a family picture again.
I lean back in the doorframe, watching them.
Lily wraps her arms around Ms. Maria’s waist and leans forward, resting her head on her mother’s shoulder.
Ms. Maria lifts Lily up and settles her on her lap, leaning back into the couch again.
The afternoon sun streams through their living room window, casting a warm glow over the family photos that line the wall behind them.
Ms. Janet slides closer to Ms. Maria, her hand settling naturally on Ms. Maria’s shoulder.
I adjust my ponytail and check my watch.
It’s almost time for me to head home for the day, but I’m enjoying spending time with one of my favorite families.
I sit down in the chair across from them, smiling at Lily as she looks over at me from within her mother’s arms.
"Ms. Maria, why don't you tell her?" Ms. Janet suggests, glancing at her wife with a knowing look.
Ms. Maria takes a deep breath and looks at me with a mixture of excitement and nervousness.
"We've decided to adopt another child, and we wanted you to be the first to know," she reveals, her eyes shining with anticipation.
I lean forward in my chair, touched by their trust in me.
"That's wonderful," I say softly, watching as Lily snuggles into her mother’s arms.
Ms. Janet smiles at me, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
"We're starting the paperwork next week, and we're hoping to bring a new sibling home for Lily soon."
Ms. Maria adds, running her hand over Lily’s dark hair.
"We want Lily to have a sibling close to her age, so that they can grow up together."
Lily perks up at the mention of a new brother or sister and climbs down from Ms. Maria’s lap.
"Will my new brother or sister be in your class too?" she asks me curiously.
Before I can answer, she looks out the window and sees Ms. Sue and Ms. Janet walking past their house.
"Ms. Sue and Ms. Janet are here!" Lily exclaims, pointing excitedly.
Ms. Maria laughs softly, "No, sweetie, that's just Ms. Janet's twin sister, Ms. Sue."
Lily's eyes widen with surprise, "I didn't know you had a twin, Mommy Janet!"
Ms. Janet chuckles, "Yes, I do. Ms. Sue is a teacher too, but she teaches in another school."
Lily's curiosity is piqued now, and she presses her face against the living room window to get a better look at Ms. Sue.
I watch as Ms. Sue waves at Lily, her smile mirroring Ms. Janet’s.
The two sisters are identical twins, and they share the same bright smile and sparkling eyes.
Ms. Maria calls out to them from the living room window, "Come on in, girls!"
Ms. Janet gets up and opens the door for her sister.
Ms. Sue walks in first, wearing an outfit almost identical to Ms. Janet’s - both are wearing floral dresses with long sleeves.
Lily approaches them cautiously, looking back and forth between the twins.
She reaches out to touch Ms. Sue's hand, then Ms. Janet's, as if confirming that they're real people.
After a moment of hesitation, Lily throws her arms around both teachers simultaneously.
Ms. Sue and Ms. Janet laugh and hug her back.
I smile at the heartwarming scene unfolding in front of me.
Ms. Sue walks over to the couch and settles in next to Ms. Janet, their identical features creating a mirror image.
Lily climbs up between them, still fascinated by their similarities.
Ms. Maria brings out a photo album and begins showing pictures of the twins growing up together.
As they reminisce about their childhood, I glance at my watch again.
I have another home visit scheduled in an hour, and I need to get going soon.
I stand up from my chair and smile at Ms. Maria and Ms. Janet.
"It was great visiting with you both," I say softly, reaching out to shake their hands.
Lily runs over to give me one last hug before I leave.
Ms. Janet and Ms. Sue rise together, their movements eerily synchronized as they walk me to the door.
As I step outside, the warmth of their home lingers with me, a reminder of the bonds we choose to create.
I pause in the doorway for a moment, watching as Lily breaks away from her spot between the twins, running toward Ms. Sue with outstretched arms.
Ms. Sue kneels down to meet her, matching Ms. Janet's natural grace as she welcomes Lily's embrace.
The little girl wraps her arms around Ms. Sue's neck, then pulls back to study her face.
She compares it to Ms. Janet's, her small fingers tracing Ms. Sue's cheek as both twins chuckle at her fascination.
Ms. Maria captures the moment on her phone, while I adjust my bag and prepare to leave.
