I looked at my best friend Emma and she was already looking at me.
She raised one eyebrow as if to ask, "Did you hear that?"
I answered with a raised eyebrow of my own.
"Yes, I did."
We looked away and the class continued.
Our teacher, Ms. Ridgway, is a little old school.
She is strict and unpredictable.
Sometimes she poops and farts in class.
Yes, you read that right.
She poops and farts in class.
It's not like she has control over it though.
From what I've heard, she has a medical condition that causes her to have no control over her bowel movements and flatulence.
It sucks for her and for us because we have to smell her shit and farts.
But what can we do?
We're in her class and she's the teacher.
She's the one with the authority so we just have to deal with it.
And we do.
We laugh about it behind her back and make jokes about it but other than that, there's nothing we can do.
It's become a part of daily life in her class.
I looked up at Ms. Ridgway and she stopped talking mid-sentence.
She gripped the edge of her desk with her hands and her face turned a deep shade of crimson.
The class grew quiet, the only sound being the squeak of chairs as people shifted uncomfortably in their seats.
Emma nudged me with her elbow and I looked at her.
She was grimacing.
I knew what was coming next.
I could smell it before it happened.
It smelled like a rotten egg but much worse.
Then there was a squelching sound.
Ms. Ridgway's navy pencil skirt got darker at the back and I knew she had just pooped in her pants.
She tried to maintain composure though and continued to write on the chalkboard with a shaking hand.
But then brown liquid started trickling down her legs.
The bell rang, releasing us from the classroom and the unbearable silence.
Everyone got up and started gathering their things.
I grabbed my books and was about to follow everyone out of the room when Ms. Johnson's voice cut through the chaos.
"Lily Chen, stay behind."
I froze mid-step, looking at Emma who shot me a sympathetic glance before following the rest of the class out the door.
The classroom emptied rapidly, leaving me alone with the nauseating stench and my soiled teacher.
Ms. Johnson remained seated at her desk, brown liquid stains visible on her chair and her hands shaking as she shuffled papers.
I reluctantly approached her desk, breathing through my mouth because I didn't want to smell it but it was too late for that.
My stomach rolled with nausea.
She looked up at me with an unreadable expression.
Her makeup was smeared from sweat running down her face.
She cleared her throat and I watched as her hands moved to the zipper of her skirt.
I could feel my muscles tensing up.
I knew what was coming next.
"Kneel in front of me," she said in a low, strained voice.
I stood at her desk, my eyes fixed on her hands as they fumbled with the zipper of her skirt.
The fluorescent lights overhead buzzed and flickered.
I could hear the sound of students leaving the school building, their backpacks bouncing behind them as they walked home.
The window was open a crack and I could hear their muffled voices talking about whatever it is teenagers talk about.
My knees touched the cold linoleum floor and I felt a chill run down my spine.
Ms. Johnson's fingers were shaking as she tried to pull down the zipper of her skirt.
The wet stains on her clothing looked darker up close.
She paused, her voice barely a whisper, "I need your help."
I swallowed the lump in my throat and knelt behind her, my fingers trembling as they worked on the zipper of her skirt.
The metal caught on the fabric several times, making a harsh scraping sound that seemed to echo in the empty room.
My face burned from the smell and from how close I was to the mess on her skirt.
She let out a shaky breath above me.
I could hear her heart pounding in her chest.
It matched the rhythm of my own.
After several attempts at pulling down the zipper, it finally gave way with a slow rasp.
The sound of it unfastening seemed to echo in the quiet room.
Her skirt loosened and more of the accident underneath came into view.
"Lily, I didn't mean for this to happen," she murmured, her voice cracking with embarrassment.
"Ms. Johnson, it's okay," I replied softly, trying to offer some comfort despite the awkwardness.
"No, you don't understand," she continued, her eyes pleading with mine. "There's something wrong... something more than just this."
