I was happy to have received a box of art supplies from my friend Alex as a birthday present, until I realized that I hadn't bought them, and that they were too fancy for my taste.
Sarah pointed out that the box had her name on it, leading us to believe that it may have been stolen from her.
When we finally met Sarah in the art studio, she accused me of being the one who stole her supplies.
She was quick to jump to conclusions and turned her back on me before I could explain myself.
Emily and Alex followed her out of the room, leaving me alone and confused.
I decided to confront Sarah about her accusations.
I was sitting on the couch at my apartment, staring at the wall, when Emily came home.
Her face softened when she saw me; she knew how much I hated conflicts.
“Hey,” she said gently, sitting next to me.
I mustered a smile for her.
“Sorry you had to deal with that.” She squeezed my hand.
“It’s okay,” I said, but it wasn’t.
She didn’t give me a chance to explain myself.”
“Explain what?”
“Oh God, did you really take her supplies?”
I shook my head, trying not to get emotional.
“I didn’t even know they were hers,” I said.
And even if you did, it isn’t stealing! She gave them to you!”
Emily said, whipping out her phone and texting furiously as she spoke.
“Where’s Alex?”
“Oh, he went to get food,” I said, looking around the room in search of him.
Emily turned to me.
“He’s going to help us figure this out.”
She put an arm around me as we waited for him to come home, but when he arrived and saw us sitting on the couch together, he looked at both of us with worry etched on his face.
Em, what’s going on?”
he asked as he took off his shoes and settled into a chair behind us.
Sarah told me that Emily accused her of stealing her art supplies and that she doesn’t want anything more to do with us.”
“Wait, what do you mean by us?”
I asked as I turned to Alex.
I didn’t even know that box was hers!”
“What box?”
We explained everything to Alex and then waited while he made a conference call to our two other friends Lea and Lisa so that we could all be on the same page.
He then called Sarah to tell her to meet us at the café across the street so we could talk.
I was still sitting on the couch when Alex walked over and handed me the bag of supplies and I recoiled from him as if he’d burnt me.
“I’m sorry, Sarah,” he said apologetically as he moved to sit next to me.
I should’ve checked to make sure they were yours first.”
“It’s okay,” I said quietly as I looked down at my hands before an idea struck me.
“I’ll just give this back to you then.”
