I have a crush on this guy named Colin.
He is super nice, and he goes to my church.
The only problem is he is sixteen, and I am thirteen.
I know it will never work out, but I like to daydream anyway.
Maybe someday it will work out.
A few Sundays ago, he shook my hand.
It was the first time we had ever touched, and it gave me goose bumps.
It made my heart beat faster, so fast, I thought it would beat right out of my chest.
It had never happened to me before, and I liked it a lot.
I can’t wait till next Sunday; maybe he will shake my hand again.
Mason, my brother, says he is looking at me.
He says maybe someday he will ask me out.
I don’t know.
I really like him.
Last Sunday, he sat in the pew in front of me and my mom.
He turned around and talked to me for a little while.
He asked me how old I was, and I told him I was thirteen.
When I told him, I was so scared, he would not like me anymore.
But on Wednesday night, he called me.
He asked if I wanted to go ridin’ with him on Saturday.
I was so happy!
I called him back and told him yes.
Then on Saturday morning, Mason woke me up and said, "Hey Adelyn."
He said, "I think you were ridin’ somewhere last night in your sleep."
I was so embarrassed!
The Sweetest Thing
I sat up in bed.
My face was hot and red, and I could feel my heart beating fast.
I looked up to see Mason leaning on my door frame with that stupid grin on his face.
The sunlight coming in through my window made it worse.
I grabbed the stuffed penguin pillow from beside me.
"Get out!" I yelled, throwing it at his head.
He ducked, but it still caught him on the shoulder.
"Sweet dreams about Colin?" he teased before backing away down the hall.
I scrambled out of bed looking for something else to throw at him, but he was already gone, his laughter echoing throughout the house.
And there, in the quiet of my room, I realized that maybe dreams were just the beginning.
The Sweetest Thing
Sunday morning, at breakfast, I picked at my cereal.
Mason sat across from me, smirking.
He kept looking at me, and it was making me mad.
I tried to ignore him, but I could feel his eyes on me.
Finally, he put down his spoon.
"Listen, Adelyn," he said.
"I know you have a crush on Colin."
I rolled my eyes at him and took another bite of cereal.
"You don’t need to be embarrassed about it. He’s a cool guy. I just want to help you not make a total fool of yourself."
He paused for a minute and looked at me with those big brown eyes of his.
The Sweetest Thing
"I know you are going ridin’ with him today, right?"
I nodded.
"Well," he said, "he is friends with my friend Emily. She’s his sister. And she tells me stuff about him. So I can help you."
I leaned forward in my chair, interested in what he had to say.
"What do you want to tell me?"
Mason smiled that crooked smile of his.
"She says he likes talking about the Lakers and music. He loves talking about basketball and bands like Green Day and Blink-182." "Okay," I said, taking another bite of cereal.
"That’s helpful."
Mason nodded his head and started eating again.
After a few bites, he stopped and looked at me again.
"I also know how to ride a horse."
I shrugged my shoulders.
"So?"
"So," Mason said, "if you want to impress him with your mad horseback riding skills, you should sit up straighter. You should post more when you trot instead of bouncing up and down in the saddle."
I rolled my eyes at him again and grabbed my toast off my plate.
Mason stood up from his chair and went over by the sink.
He got into a pretend riding position with his feet shoulder length apart and held onto an imaginary horse with one hand.
Then he started bouncing up and down in the saddle while making horse noises with his mouth.
He looked ridiculous standing there in his pajama pants that were too small for him and his ratty t-shirt that was stained with last night’s dinner.
I shook my head at him and went upstairs to get ready for my ride with Colin.
The Sweetest Thing
As soon as I got into my room, I closed the door behind me and looked in the mirror hanging on the back of it.
I took a deep breath and whispered to myself, "Okay, Adelyn, you can do this."
Just then, there was a knock on my door, and Mason's voice came through, "Hey, before you go, remember not to mention anything about your age unless he asks."
I opened the door slightly and peeked out, "Why? Do you think it matters to him?"
