I was moving on with my life.
That’s what I told myself, anyway.
I’d just left everything behind — my friends, my family, the only home I’d ever known.
I’d done all of this to start fresh.
To see what other possibilities life held.
To find out who I was outside of the context of the only life I’d ever known.
And hopefully to leave my virginity behind.
It wasn’t something I was proud of, or exactly sure how it had happened.
I mean, I was a lesbian, and I’d certainly met plenty of women in college.
But none of them had really sparked my interest.
None of them had made me want to take that final step and have sex for the first time.
All of my girlfriends had been wonderful, but they just didn’t do it for me.
I was starting to think that I’d just never be interested.
That I’d be one of those women who was happy to just live a celibate life.
It was a thought that was hard to accept, but I was trying to do it.
I was trying to be okay with it, and to just focus on the other things that were important in my life.
Like my career.
Like my friends.
Like the new city I had moved to.
I had moved here for work, and I was excited to get started.
I was excited to see what the city had to offer.
But as I stood in line at the bakery counter, waiting for my breakfast, I couldn’t help but think about my lack of experience.
I fidgeted with my phone, pretending to check my email while actually scrolling through my dating apps.
It wasn’t something I normally did, but today was a special day.
It was the first day of the rest of my life.
And I wanted it to be perfect. The line moved forward, and I stepped up to the counter.
The woman behind the counter smiled at me and asked what she could get for me.
"I’ll have a coffee and a pastry," I said, looking over the selection behind her.
"Which kind?"
"Um, how about that one?" I asked, pointing to a croissant that looked delicious.
"Great choice," she said, ringing it up for me and handing me a cup of coffee and a plate with my pastry on it.
I took them from her and turned around, ready to leave.
But then I heard a laugh that stopped me in my tracks. It was a melodic sound, like music almost.
It was beautiful and captivating, and it caught my attention immediately.
I turned around to see where it had come from, and that’s when I saw her.
She was standing in the doorway to the kitchen, leaning against the doorframe as she watched me with amused brown eyes.
She was tall, with dark curly hair cascading past her shoulders and down her back in loose waves.
She wore a flour-dusted apron over her clothes, and she looked absolutely beautiful.
"Having trouble finding what you’re looking for?" she asked, gesturing to my phone.
I felt my cheeks heat up with embarrassment as I quickly shoved my phone into my pocket.
"No," I said, shaking my head.
"I was just checking something."
She smiled at me and stepped closer.
"I’m Celeste," she said, holding out her hand.
"Nice to meet you."
I shook her hand, feeling a jolt of electricity as our palms touched.
"Alexandra," I replied.
"It’s nice to meet you too."
"So, what brings you in here today?"
Celeste asked, wiping her flour-dusted hands on her apron.
"Just grabbing some breakfast," I said, holding up my cup of coffee and plate with the pastry on it.
"Well, if you ever need anything else, let me know," she said, smiling at me.
"I’ll be happy to help." I thanked her and turned to leave, but then I heard her call out to me again.
"Wait," she said, coming over to me.
"Let me get you a fresh one. That one is old."
She took the pastry off of my plate and walked back into the kitchen.
I waited for a few minutes, and then she came back out with a fresh-baked croissant in her hand.
She handed it to me and smiled.
"There you go," she said.
"Enjoy your breakfast."
I thanked her again and left the bakery, feeling a little more hopeful than I had when I went in there.
Maybe this new city wouldn’t be so bad after all. "So how do you like the city so far?" Celeste asked, lingering by my table after bringing me another cup of coffee.
"It’s nice," I said, glancing around the bakery before focusing back on her.
"I just moved here yesterday."
"Oh? What made you decide to move here?"
Celeste asked curiously, leaning against the counter as she watched me with undisguised interest.
I shrugged slightly as I took a sip of my coffee before answering. "I got a job offer here," I said simply.
"A job offer? That sounds exciting!"
Celeste exclaimed, making me smile slightly at her enthusiasm.
"Yeah," I agreed softly, setting my cup down on the table in front of me and adjusting it slightly so that it was straighter.
