We debuted in 2018 through Idol Producer survival show competition series 2018 Mnet Idol Producer Season 2/3/4/
I was so happy to be able to debut with such wonderful members.
However, I was not as happy as I thought I would be when I first debuted.
Because my weight was too heavy and my body shape was not good enough, I was not able to perform freely on stage.
I was always worried about the fans' reactions and the paparazzi's camera flashes.
I was constantly worried that they would take pictures of me and criticize me on social media for being overweight.
I sit alone in the practice room after hours, staring at my reflection in the mirror.
The fluorescent lights overhead cast harsh shadows across my face, making every curve and angle look more defined than they would in natural light.
I run a hand over my stomach, feeling the softness of my skin.
My phone buzzes on the bench next to me - another notification from our fan cafe.
I pick it up hesitantly, knowing that I shouldn't be looking at it right now.
But I can't help myself.
I open the app and scroll through the comments from today's performance.
Most of them are praising our synchronization and energy, but one catches my eye.
"San looks different lately..."
I quickly close the app and put my phone back down.
I grab my water bottle off the bench and head to the door of the practice room.
It's late and I should probably be going home, but I don't want to go back to my dorm just yet. Instead, I head to the rooftop of our building.
The night air is cool against my skin as I step out onto the roof, and I take a deep breath, trying to calm myself down.
I look out over the city, watching the lights of the cars below twinkle like stars.
I hear footsteps behind me and turn to see Youngbaek coming towards me with two cups of tea in his hands.
He smiles at me as he approaches.
"Hey, San," he says, handing me one of the cups of tea.
"Thanks," I reply, taking a sip of the hot liquid.
As I sip the tea, I can't help but think of my childhood days spent at the pool in Busan.
It feels like a lifetime ago, and now, every time I look at myself, all I can see are the imperfections.
The city lights stretch out before us, casting long shadows across the ground.
I take another sip of my tea, letting the warmth spread through my body.
My phone buzzes again - it's Y/N this time.
She's asking if I'll meet her on the practice room roof.
I tell her that I'm already here.
A few minutes later, she appears at the top of the stairs, fidgeting with the sleeves of her shirt as she walks towards me.
The city lights cast long shadows across her face as she stands beside me at the railing. "Hey," she says softly, turning to face me.
I lean against the railing, studying her tense posture.
She fidgets with the sleeves of her shirt, her eyes fixed on the city below.
The hum of traffic and the distant sound of sirens fill the air, but up here on the rooftop, it feels eerily quiet.
When she doesn't continue speaking, I take another sip of tea, letting the silence stretch between us.
Her eyes remain fixed on her hands gripping the metal railing.
The city lights cast a glow over her features, illuminating the dark circles under her eyes.
Her long hair falls around her face in loose waves, partially obscuring her expression.
I notice that she's still wearing the clothes she had on during practice earlier today - a worn pair of jeans and a faded t-shirt.
The familiar scent of sweat and fabric softener clings to her, reminding me of our hours spent together in the practice room. Finally, she takes a deep breath and turns to face me, her eyes meeting mine for a moment before she looks away again.
"San," she says quietly, her voice barely audible over the hum of traffic below.
But before she can continue speaking, her phone starts ringing in her pocket.
She fumbles with her phone, silencing the ringtone with trembling fingers.
I watch as she shoves the device back into her pocket, her hands still shaking slightly.
She takes a deep breath and turns to face me again, her eyes meeting mine for just a moment before darting away.
The city noise fades into the background as she shifts closer, her shoulder almost touching mine at the railing.
My tea has gone cold in my hands, but I grip the cup tightly, sensing that what she's about to say is important.
She whispers my name again, softer this time, and I feel my heart rate quicken as she leans in slightly.
"San, I overheard the managers talking," she says, her voice trembling slightly.
"They're planning to replace you for the next comeback."
Her words hang in the air, heavy and undeniable, as I struggle to process the revelation.
I stare blankly at the city lights, my mind struggling to make sense of her words.
The cold metal railing digs into my palms as I grip it tighter, trying to steady myself.
Y/N places her hand over mine on the railing, but I pull away sharply.
"There must be some mistake," I mutter, turning away from her and pacing across the rooftop.
She watches me with worried eyes, her arms crossed tightly over her chest.
My phone feels heavy in my pocket - I should call Hongjoong, but my fingers won't move.
Y/N steps toward me again, reaching out hesitantly, but I brush past her and head for the stairwell.
I rush down the stairwell, my footsteps echoing off the concrete walls.
But Y/N's voice follows me, her hurried steps matching mine.
"San, wait!"
She calls out, her voice echoing off the walls.
I reach the practice room floor and slam through the door, but she catches it before it closes.
The hallway is empty except for us, fluorescent lights casting harsh shadows on the walls.
She grabs my wrist, her fingers wrapping tightly around it.
I try to shake her off, but she holds on.
"San, please let me help," she pleads, her voice cracking.
"I love you so much..."
Her words hit me like a physical blow.
I stand there, motionless in the middle of the hallway, as her grip on my wrist loosens just a little.
The fluorescent lights cast harsh shadows across her face, making it look like she's crying even though I know she's not.
My heart pounds against my ribs as I slowly turn to face her fully.
The confession hangs in the air between us, mixing with the news of my replacement to create a suffocating tension.
I study her face, taking in the small scar near her eyebrow from that time she fell during training, the way she bites her lip when she's nervous, and the determined set of her shoulders despite her trembling hands.
I take a deep breath, feeling the weight of everything crashing down, and whisper, "I need time."
I watch as her shoulders slump, her grip on my wrist loosening until she releases me completely.
She takes a step back, her eyes searching my face for any sign of what I'm thinking.
I can feel the weight of her love and confusion hanging in the air between us.
She nods slowly, her lips parting as if she wants to say something more.
But instead, she turns and walks away down the long hallway lined with practice rooms.
The fluorescent lights overhead cast an unforgiving glare over everything, making it all feel even more surreal.
I stand there frozen, watching as she disappears around the corner toward the main practice room.
Through the glass wall of the room I'm standing in front of, I see Seonghwa stretching his legs before practice starts.
He glances up and notices Y/N approaching.
Their conversation is muffled by the thick glass, but I can see their expressions clearly. Y/N stops by the door, looking back at me one last time before turning to face Seonghwa.
She gestures animatedly with her hands as she talks, her face twisted in a mix of sadness and determination.
Seonghwa's expression changes from casual curiosity to serious concern as he listens to her.
He places a steadying hand on her shoulder, and I can see her wipe away tears that have finally broken free.
My stomach twists into knots as I realize she's telling him everything - about my replacement, her confession, all of it.
