The Surgeon's Dilemma
I walk into the trauma department and see Matt leaning against the wall near the nurses' station.
He is looking at a file with a frown on his face.
His eyes are narrowed and his lips are in a thin line.
I can tell he is not happy with whatever he is reading.
I walk up to him and stand next to him, but he doesn't even acknowledge me.
I know he's probably going over the cases from the past few days to see what we could have done differently.
I stand there with him for a few minutes before he finally closes the file and turns to me.
"Have you called everyone?"
"Yes, they should all be here in a few minutes," I reply.
He nods and walks away from me, heading towards the conference room.
The Surgeon's Dilemma
I follow behind him, wondering what he's going to say to everyone. The interns are all standing around, some of them leaning against the walls while others are sitting on empty gurneys.
They all look nervous, like they know they're in trouble.
Matt walks into the conference room and stands at the front of the room, surveying everyone in front of him.
"Alright, let's get started," he says, his voice loud and clear.
The interns all turn to face him, their expressions varying from fear to curiosity.
Matt begins by going over the recent cases that have come into the trauma department, pointing out specific mistakes that were made and how they could have been prevented.
He talks about how important it is for everyone to work together as a team and communicate effectively during critical moments like those.
He also emphasizes the importance of following proper protocols and procedures when treating patients, especially in life-threatening situations. "We need to make sure that we're doing everything we can to save lives," he says firmly.
"And that means being prepared for any situation that comes our way."
The interns all nod their heads in agreement, taking in every word that Matt says.
The Surgeon's Dilemma
They know how serious he is about his job and how much he cares about saving lives.
After Matt finishes talking, he assigns new protocols for trauma responses and tells everyone to review them carefully before their next shift starts.
He also reminds them that they will be having regular meetings like this one from now on so they can discuss any issues or concerns they may have regarding patient care or hospital policies in general. As Matt finishes speaking, Frank Iero raises his hand tentatively from his spot near the back of the room.
Matt looks at him expectantly, waiting for Frank to speak up.
Frank's hand stays raised as the other interns start shuffling papers and whispering amongst themselves.
I nod at Frank to go ahead and speak, noticing Matt's impatient stance by the whiteboard.
Frank leans forward in his chair, pointing to a diagram in his notes.
"Um, sorry to interrupt, but I was wondering if you could clarify something for me," he says nervously.
Matt frowns slightly but nods for Frank to continue.
Frank clears his throat before asking, "In the sequence for chest tube insertion in trauma cases, do we administer the local anesthetic before or after making the incision?"
Matt steps closer to Frank, his expression changing from annoyance to interest.
He walks over to Frank's table and picks up a marker from the cup on the edge.
"Good question, Frank," Matt says, drawing a quick diagram on the whiteboard.
"We administer the local anesthetic before making the incision to minimize patient discomfort and ensure smoother insertion."
The Surgeon's Dilemma
Frank nods, relief evident on his face as he scribbles down notes, while Matt adds, "And remember, always communicate with your team during each step."
