I was known for being adorable.
I was known for being interesting.
Kai was known for being cool.
Emma was known as the girl who loved everything that was pink and white and had stars, rainbows, or unicorns on it.
Emmett was known as the guy who hated being a villain but loved gadgets.
We were all known for having superpowers, except for me.
I was the only one that didn't have superpowers.
Everyone had superpowers in our town, except me.
I think it was because I was adopted.
No one really knew where I was from, except for Christie, but he never told me.
He kept saying that it was none of my business and that I didn't need to know that right now.
I didn't argue with him because he seemed smart and I knew that I could trust him.
Everyone trusted him, including my other adopted siblings: Emma, Emmett, and Kai.
They were all related, and they were from New Jersey.
The Superpowerless Sibling
Walking deeper into the park, I noticed that the others had wandered ahead of us.
We were all on a winding path that led to the pond in the middle of the park.
The leaves crunched under our feet as we walked.
Kai and I slowed our pace, letting the gap between us and our siblings grow wider.
I could hear Emma laughing and chasing after butterflies, and I could see Emmett sitting under an oak tree, tinkering with one of his gadgets.
My heart was beating fast as I checked over my shoulder one last time.
Emma was still near the pond, and Emmett was still under the tree.
I couldn't hold it in anymore; I leaped onto Kai's back, wrapping my arms around his shoulders.
He stumbled forward, laughing, as I tickled his sides.
"Hey, hey, okay, okay, I give up!" Kai chuckled, trying to catch his breath.
The Superpowerless Sibling
I slid off his back and whispered, "Kai, do you think Christie knows more about my past than he's letting on?"
Kai hesitated for a moment before replying softly, "Actually, there's something I've been meaning to tell you about that."
I slid off his back and sat next to him on a wooden bench.
Our shoulders touched, and I could feel the warmth of the afternoon sun filtering through the leaves of the trees above us.
The sound of Emma's laughter echoed from somewhere near the butterfly garden.
Kai fidgeted with his hat, avoiding my eyes as he gathered his thoughts.
I waited patiently, my heart beating faster with anticipation.
"Last week, Christie gave me something," Kai finally said, pulling out a worn envelope from his jacket pocket.
"He told me to give it to you when the time was right."
I took the envelope from Kai's hand and examined it carefully.
The paper was old and yellowed, with a faint scent of lavender wafting from it.
My fingers trembled as I opened the envelope and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
The Superpowerless Sibling
It was a DNA test result.
I scanned the document quickly, my eyes widening as I read the words that changed everything: "You are not biologically related to Christie or your siblings."
My mind reeled as I tried to process the information.
"What does this mean?"
I asked Kai, my voice barely above a whisper. "It means you weren't adopted from Christie's family like we were," Kai replied gently, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder.
"You were adopted from another family altogether."
I felt like my world had been turned upside down.
All this time, I thought I was part of this family, but now I was faced with the reality that I didn't even know where I came from.
Before I could ask any more questions, Emma came running towards us, her blonde pigtails bouncing behind her.
"Look what I caught!"
The Superpowerless Sibling
She exclaimed excitedly, holding up a glass jar containing a beautiful butterfly.
I stared at the DNA results in my hand while Emma showed off her butterfly.
She was so happy and carefree, and I didn't want to ruin her day with my own problems.
So I smiled and pretended to be interested in her butterfly, all the while trying to process the information that had just been dropped on me.
After a few minutes, Emma ran off again, chasing after another butterfly.
I turned to Kai, and tears began to well up in my eyes.
He took my trembling hands in his, his blue hair peeking out from under his hat.
The park grew quiet except for the distant sounds of children playing on the swings and slide.
"I don't care where you came from," he whispered, squeezing my fingers gently.
"You're still you."
His words made my chest tighten with emotion.
The Superpowerless Sibling
"But there's more," Kai continued, his voice barely audible above the rustling leaves.
"Christie said your real family might be looking for you."
I felt a jolt of shock run through me, my mind racing with possibilities.
