Jasmine
"Hey Jake, hey bro, hey Jake!"
I heard someone screaming my name from the other side of the beach.
I turned around and saw a girl running towards me, waving her hands in the air.
"Hey what's up?"
I asked her, stopping her in her tracks.
"Emily is looking for you, she said something about a girl meeting another girl on the beach during a party in the summer," the girl said to me.
Then it clicked into place, I remembered her telling me that she was going to meet up with a girl on the beach during one of the summer parties that we had every week.
I thanked her for letting me know and then ran off in the direction that she had come from.
After a few minutes of running, I finally spotted Emily and then saw Jasmine standing a little bit away from her.
She was staring at the ocean and I could tell that she was lost deep in thought.
I approached her slowly and then stopped right behind her.
She turned around and then looked up at me, giving me a small smile.
"Hey," I said to her, returning her smile.
"Hi."
"What are you thinking about?"
I asked her, looking out at the ocean.
She sighed deeply and then looked down at her feet.
"I was just thinking about how my life would be if my mom was still here with us," she said softly.
The Summer We Met
I took a few steps closer to her and then felt the cool sand squishing between my toes.
She was still looking at the horizon, lost in thought.
I hesitated for a moment and then wrapped my arms around her shoulders, pulling her into a hug.
She leaned into me at first and then pulled away slightly, her body tense.
Then she relaxed and leaned into me again.
The only sound that could be heard was the waves crashing against the shore.
"Thanks," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the sound of the ocean.
I nodded my head, holding her tighter, hoping that I could help ease her pain.
"Jake, there's something I need to tell you," she said, her voice trembling slightly.
"What is it, Emily?" I asked, concern lacing my words.
"I found a letter from my mom... hidden in her old jewelry box," she revealed, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.
The Summer We Met
I nodded my head, holding her tighter.
"It said that she was sorry for leaving me and that she had to leave because of my dad. She said that she would always be watching over me from wherever she was," she said, her voice cracking.
"I'm sorry, Emily."
I said, holding her tighter.
She nodded her head and then pulled away slightly.
"Thanks, Jake. I just wanted you to know," she said softly.
I nodded my head and then looked up at the sky.
The sun was setting in the distance and the sky was painted with hues of orange and pink.
Then I noticed that the wind had picked up and that the sky was darkening.
I looked out at the ocean and saw that the waves were crashing more violently against the shore than they had been earlier.
"Emily, we need to find shelter," I said to her, glancing up at the dark clouds gathering above us. She nodded her head and then wiped her eyes on her shirt.
We turned around and started walking quickly across the beach towards a pavilion that was a short distance away from where we were standing.
The Summer We Met
We reached it just as a loud clap of thunder sounded above us.
The storm hit us suddenly, pounding rain coming down on top of us as we huddled together under the pavilion.
The wind howled loudly above us, causing the roof to creak ominously under its force.
Lightning flashed brightly in the sky above us, illuminating Emily's face as she stared out at the storm raging around us.
Her face was etched with worry as she watched the storm rage on outside of our small shelter.
The Summer We Met
The rain pounded loudly against the roof of the pavilion, causing it to shake slightly.
We stood there, pressed together by the storm raging around us.
Our clothes were wet and clinging to our bodies, but neither of us noticed.
The air was thick with tension as we stood there, waiting for the storm to pass.
Emily's hand brushed against mine and I felt a jolt of electricity run through my body.
She turned her head and then looked up at me, her eyes searching for something.
I squeezed her hand in response, offering her silent comfort.
Lightning flashed brightly in the sky above us, illuminating Emily's face.
I saw something in her gaze that I hadn't seen before, something that made my heart pound in my chest.
Then I slowly leaned forward and pressed my lips against hers.
The Summer We Met
The rain pounded loudly against the roof of the pavilion, sounding like a thousand drums beating in unison.
Her lips were soft and warm, a stark contrast to the cold storm raging around us.
Our kiss deepened as we tried to escape the chaos that surrounded us.
I felt her hands in my hair, pulling me closer as if she was trying to anchor herself to me.
The storm raged on around us, but it seemed distant now, replaced by the intensity of our kiss.
We finally pulled apart, both of us breathless.
Emily smiled up at me, a rare genuine smile that lit up her face despite the darkness surrounding us.
